Typical of Specialized to make a big fuss like they invented the idea. Cyclocross riders have been doing this for years... They take multiple bikes to a race and switch them out every lap. Also, 35 pounds is too heavy for a disposable. They need to get it down to 25 pounds. Disposable tech is already available from component suppliers. Cannondale has been selling carbon lefty forks that break after one ride for years. Specialized need to work with Cannondale on forks and get the other "breaks after one ride" manufacturers together to spec the parts out.

Disposable frame.... bah. Marketing speak for "we've farmed our frame manufacturing out to Crank Brothers".

The only downside I can see is the extra work on the clean-up crew after race weekend. Tear off, lost gloves and now "used" frames littering the trackside

How long before an F1 style governing body dictates how many races you need to use the same frame for?

X2 ^^^ I dson't like the idea of riding a bike that could shatter in the next rock garden at mach speed!!! anyone seen a carbon ceramic rotor fail at speed? not pretty. 25lbs, couldn't a guy just loose ten pounds and have the same effect?

This is a brilliant idea but I say they take it a step further. If they're tossing the frame anyway why not use that to your advantage? Create a little extra motivation for the rider. Since they've rigged the carbon with lasers anyway why not set them on a timer, and maybe just change the light frequency, to actively destroy the bike.
Think about it... "Look Sam... Atherton nailed this course in 4.38 so we've set your bike to explode at 4.22. You better hit it, timer's already started" I think it could work.

I just put in an order for 40 frames/bikes. One for each race run and qualifying.

yeah man. I am totally in on this. I have been looking for a source of "Natural Male Enhancement" for quite some time now and I think this may be the key.

8 or 9 years ago the process of compression molded carbon fiber started being used with bike manufacturing. Guys at the time were saying "I don't know about that or how strong it will be".
Look at the market now and how many products are being manufactured with compression molding. Head tube/BB shells/Seat tube juctions, suspension linkage pieces, frame integrated disc brake mounts, drop outs, brake leavers, cranks, one piece fork crown/steer tubes...... the list goes on. What Specialized has done is truely a game changer for the bike industry as a whole! Forget the fact that they have made a DH frame. The fact that they have been able to inlay sensors to analyze the integrety of the material a key structure points is freakin amazing! This could have a huge impact on the high end market of DH/Road/XC and even BMX racing. I look forward to the spin offs of this technology. It may be expensive now, but thats only cause its new. Wait a few years. Jus like Di2, it will get cheaper and trickle down to lower price points. |
