i think for "grip" wise, if you use pins they use on straitlines, i'm sure it'll be the same, but i think just having the whole "made in canada" i guess people feel more patriotic?

I am all for supporting local products but paying 150 for pedal isn't my cup of tea. I don't own any straitline components but I do own RF.

Plastics are much more durable than in the past. But I'd assume the biggest advantage is weight saving and replaceable refills.

Good point about the Allen head. I always appreciate that little feature. Best if its an 8mm and not a 6mm head.
I agree, $150 ain't too bad, I'm running prerunners and they cost more.
And they also don't have the allen head, I miss that too, my shimano dx did have it.

i'm totally getting some of these. i love stuff that challenges the cheap/light/strong axiom.

pedals are expendables. paying excess coin for them is silly.

shouldn't be the case. pedal threads are oriented such that any pedalling-induced shifting should tighten, rather than loosen, the pedals in the cranks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Precess...8mechanical%29

Quote:
Precession is the process of a round part in a round hole rotating with respect to that hole because of clearance between them and a radial force on the part that changes direction. The direction of rotation of the inner part is opposite to the direction of rotation of the radial force. Fretting between the part and the hole is often a result of this motion.

For a pedal, a rotating load arises from downward pedaling force on a spindle rotating with its crank making the predominantly downward force effectively rotate about the pedal spindle. What may be less evident is that even tightly fitting parts have relative clearance due to their elasticity, metals not being rigid materials as is evident from steel springs.
i would say a pedal unthreading on it's own - esp. both pedals - is definitely a cause for concern. what say you, mr. engineer?

I think you get an honorary membership to the Nerdy Engineer Club!!

I am thinking they may not have been tight enough when they first went on...

I am also going to be thinking about this whole thing when I can't sleep tonight - thanks!

I pedal for about 90% of the time when Im riding DH and therefore tag rocks with my pedals....alot.

Ive busted everything from 12.99 bargain binners to higher end shimano, easton and crank bros products (the easton,I think,on my first run with them)

Not a freaking chance in hell I'd pay 150 bucks for a set of pedals (again) even if they were made in the champagne room down at Brandi'z.

I would totally agree intill I rode a set of expensive pedals. I've never tried the Staitlines, so I'll refrain from commenting on them, but my Pointone racing pedals have really changed my view. I was riding MG-1 almost exclusively, due to their function, light weight and the damn cheap price they could be bought for. I used Ti and steel spindles and did have a couple of issues with the Ti spindle*.

My Point One's are light, strong and super thin with a big platform. I think I paid roughly $150 so they weren't cheap. After a full year, I'm amazed at how well they have stood up. At the Mtn Washington race, I slacked my bike out as much as I could via the rear drop out and sagged the shock a bit more, via the longer travel setting. The day after the race we went on a pedally ride and I bashed them off of everything in sight and at the end of the day it was hard to tell they had even been hit. The pedals feel awesome under foot, bearing(no DU bushings) are still running strong and they are ready to do another full season. I don't run them on all my bikes as that would be a little much, but I am looking to get a set for a second bike.

Oh and they come in RAWR....

*Ti spindle broke at the nut that keeps the body on. Spindle seems strong, but the small thread on the outboard end of the spindle seems weak. I've broken 2 spindle and my dad broke 2 too. Seems like it might have been a bad batch, as we both have other pedals that were bought at a different time and the spindles look a little different and most importantly....haven't broken.

I think thats the same axles as my dmr ones and they said on the packaging something about only being approved for people under 165 lbs... May have been the issue although I thought it was pretty dumb plan.

The wife bent 2 sets of cranks(don't ever buy gravity lights) and her ti spindle pedals were fine(still going strong).I ran one of my pedals into a log at a pretty high rate of speed that stopped the bike dead and sent me out the front door and they are still running fine. On the pedals that had issues the nut broke while pedaling and it broke right at the threads where there is little to no load on the pedal. Yes Ti spindles have a load rating, but I really don't think this was the issue.
