Vicious hit

go compare the players from the 80's to the players now. They are bigger, stronger, faster and hit harder.

should they just keep letting players have season or career ending injuries because that's the way the sport is?

just because it was stupid in the 80's doesn't mean it has to happen now.

no one wants to take the toughness out of hockey, just the shots to the head.

Why isn't the attention going to the obvious problem with having a solid wall at the end of the benches? This isn't the first time a player has smoked into that wall. Can't they angle it off so that the players deflect instead of coming to a complete stop. We can all speculate whether Chara knew what he was doing when he rode Pacioretty into the turnbuckle but that hit isn't worth talking about anywhere else on the ice.

There are a lot of bad hits and goon like actions in the game and they should clean it up

I watched the clip a doz times which is hard for me cuz I could give a flying fuck about hockey BUT it didnt really look that vicious to me ?

the out come was obviously really bad ... they should pad that wall for sure

you don't find it just slightly suspicious that Chara waited a good amount of time after the puck was gone to push him into the boards?

there is that photo with Chara's hand and forearm still on the guys head as his face hits the stanchion.

anywhere else on the ice this is a normal check, but this happened in this spot and the players know where they are on the ice. I agree it all happens pretty fast in real time, but players have to be responsible for what the consequences of their actions

If he lets him go he may have had a breakaway. I have the same play done to me in rec hockey when I chip it past the D at the line. It's interference for sure but if that had happened in front of the penalty box it would have been nothing more than interference. Chara may have given him a bit "extra" cause he's been a pain lately but I don't think he wanted to see him taken off in a stretcher.

It's even more suspicious as Chara went after the same player at the end of the game after Max duked him and scored the OT goal the last time the 2 met.

It definitely will look bad if the NHL caves to air canada dollars after standing by claiming no issue while they watched payers like pacioretty, crosby, mitchell, savard and others go down. I don't know how they save face now that external pressure is mounting and claiming that their attempts to limit injuries are a joke.

One thing for certain is the march 24th game between the two teams is goina be one to watch.

I think this incident stands on it's own compared to Crosby, etc because it wasn't a head shot like the others. The league appears to be trying to draw the line between injuries from intentionally dangerous plays and ones that are merely accidents. In contrast to Chara's hit was Gillies most recent hit where he got a a 10 game suspension that many thought was too harsh, but coming right after a 9 game suspension the league is trying to use suspensions to stop the repeat offenders which IMO is the best way to make the game safer.

Any way you want to look at it the league has to make it clear what constitutes dangerous play and ignore AC and the peanut gallery. The fans will keep watching anyway.

I would argue the Gillies suspension is more out in left field. A repeat offender who contributes no star power or skill. Old school nhl suspensions at their best will always hammer the scapegoat.

well I watched it a bunch ,probably more hockey than I have seen all season cuz I just don't see anything but rough and tumble play but I admit I am a pretty unsophisticated hockey fan ?

Answer me this what would have happened if nobody got hurt on that hit ,if that stantion was padded or spring loaded or SFT?

was the hit wrong or is the rink was unsafe ,it will be interesting to see if they do something about that stantion ??

would buddy have even got a penalty let alone the shit storm he is now in ?

Sportsnet dudes were yakking about the hit after Tuesday's Canucks game. The one guy said ... "no way the NHL is going to discipline Chara, he's a Norris candidate".

You make a good point. He still could have hit him earlier, but regardless he did have a slight possibility of getting a breakaway.

That is a moot point as that is not the reality. This wouldnt be being discussed if the late hit happened most anywhere else on the ice.

Maybe something needs to be done about the stanchions. It took until the 80s to put the nets on magnets, lots of broken knees and bones before then.
