North Shore in 1998

This article at pinkbike is a good read, for those who don't check 'over there'. Early shore photography and comments by Sterling Lorence.

You can tell someone has great talent when most of those shots came from one roll of film. Between the composition, action and lighting I was hard pressed to get one quality shot per roll back when I shot film religiously.

It's also great to see the shore depicted in the way I remember it before I moved away about 10 years ago.

ahh, sweet vintage shore. so many memories. would love to see more images from the archives. pull out your dusty shoeboxes of kodachrome!

and damn, pinkbike is rocking the content (and contributors) these days. may have to change my opinion of the site (taking care to avoid the forums of course).

PB is awesome, as long as you don't bother with the forums and article comments.

Back in 96'/97' when I started DH riding in the valley, we didn't even know the shore existed. It's amazing to see what was in there, that far back.

Does anyone have pics of the shore circa 1988?

1998...the year of kona explosif's and rocky blizzards decked out with 4" Z1's,XT v-brakes or magura HS-22 hydros, roach pads and ring gods.

Those were indeed the days....we were so bad assed back then.

I started riding on Seymour in '82 or '83. Severed was not there. When it went in it was for hiking up and it was called the good samaritan trail. It must have been cut in the mid eighties sometime - pretty sure it was there by '87. So long ago I can hardly remember.

I love this. I've been reading a stash of old 'Bike' magazines from the mid-90's and I love the oldschool vibe. Mountain biking seems a little weirder, or at least, how it is described in the old magazine. Bit more counter culture. Lots of talk about long epic rides etc. That said I don't really miss the bikes of those days.

I still have my '86 Rocky Mtn Blizzard. Sloping tope tube, hand built stem, U-brakes, biopace and all. Hangs right beside the Knolly for pure irony.

certainly different. mountain bikes were mountain bikes. we didn't have the subcategorization we do now. we just selected the burliest & most effective parts we could find to get the job done (through breaking lots of gear). watching the evolution of the shore and the associated industry to support the level of riding (ie, the birth of raceface, syncros, and the local shore-friendly frames from rocky, brodie, mountain & beach, etc) was cool, to say the least. we were at the leading edge of mountainbike development for a good bit; exciting times for sure.

that was probably my favorite era of mtn biking. the scene was so good and new and fresh and the locals really didnt know what they had right on the doorstep. skinny tires ,shit brakes and the like. those were the days indeed.

shit brakes by todays standards but they still seemed to do the trick, to a point anyway

I have to go to my parents house and dig through the old photo albums. I have pictures from when I raced XC back in 93-94 era. There were some good pic's from back then. I've got ones from the Vedder mountain challenge. The first and second years of the Golden Ears XC race, there was one on Seymour that included severed as part of the course, and one downtown that included a stretch down the stairs of the art gallery.

If I can find these I'll dust off my old scanner and post them!

Nice... the "Kona Hell of the North" I think it was with Severed on the course. Man, I'm getting nostalgic...

^ i was racing xc at that time as well. vedder was pretty epic (nasty climb). the hell of the north (on seymour) was rad. i remember braking my rear brake cable on the first lap and having to ride (incl. severed) w/ front brake only.

the race scene was big back then; lots of events... vanier, st. marys, mosquito creek, the roach race in poco, test of metal in roberts creek, hornby bike fest, burnt bridge classic on the island, plus a gaggle of interior events... great turnouts, and deep prizes in all cats - some nice hardware for novice & sport classes, and cash for expert & pro. twas the heydays of xc racing for sure.
