Laptop>TV issue

I'll try and keep this in Layman's terms.

I Have an HP 4 year old Laptop, that I've been plugging into my flatscreen TV with a VGA cord. It used to automatically detect the VGA was plugged in, and make the screen go black on my laptop, and transfer over to my TV. I watch a fair bit of material for work on the big screen, and as of this weekend, it stopped transferring my main image automatically over to my TV. I played with the display settings since and got it to "share" a screen, but I don't want to have to be dragging items over to my "other screen (TV)" to view them.

Suggestions would be great, thanks.

unplug your VGA cable. Turn off your laptop. turn on your laptop with the vga unplugged. turn off your laptop. plug in vga cable and turn on laptop.

^ This is best suggestion.

Often laptops have a "function" key that switches monitor configs. Maybe you have hit that accidentally?

And maybe your video driver software (ATI, Intel, nVidia, etc.) has a profile option? You can save both configs and then it's one or two clicks to change.

Windows 7 has vastly improved these options too btw.

If you don't have a fn key for the projector (mine looks like a monitor w/ a arrow pointing out of it), then try this (might just work for win 7, not sure)

hit the windows key and the letter P at the same time. should come up with the various "connect to a projector" options. you want "duplicate" or "projector only".
