Trails on Lower Cypress
I was driving up to Cypress Ski area this past weekend, and I noticed a number of vehicles with bike racks on them parked across the road from the Maintenance Yard (?) at the bottom of the Cypress Road. I saw a few riders as well, with both DH and AM bikes. I know there are trails higher up the mountain, but are there some more XC or AM trails in that lower area, or is that just the pick-up area for the upper trails? My son has ridden most of the upper trails, and informs me that they are too advanced for my old man skill level
![]() I was going to stop and ask someone, but there was no room to pull off the road. Thanks! |

That's a question best answered somewhere else. But in my opinion, Cypress is no place for an XC bike. Ya, I'm sure somebody has a tale of some piece of XC trail that their neighbours boyfriends cousin rode one time, but the stuff people are shuttling isn't XC friendly.
And it depends on your definition of AM. |

There is XC if you know where to go. Like down that road and hang a right at the hanging stump just when Goat mountain comes in to view.

All good and well to be secretive about Cypress. But if we don't have more people riding these trails, and caring about them then we'll probably lose them.
I don't know if anyone saw the article in the paper regarding the MV Regional plan that had Urban areas as high as 2000 meters on Cypress. The WV OCP states that the area between 1200ft and 2000ft is currently limited recreational. There is a variation in the WV OCP that could result in the loss of most of the trails below the 3rd switchback. Summary - We could lose the Cypress Mountain Bike trails to development. We could preserve them if enough people care. |
