This is BR but doesn't fit on the Shore forum.

Mayor's bike stolen across street from bike summit
April 17th, 2010 @ 3:01pm

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker's call for a more bicycle-friendly capital city has failed to produce immediate results.

Becker says his bike was stolen Friday outside city hall after he spoke at the Utah Bike Summit across the street.

The thief used bolt cutters to cut the lock and took off with the silver, 15-gear FILA bike as the all-day summit took place in the main Salt Lake City Library.

Becker, who phoned in a report to the police department, says he'll use light rail and walk until either the bike is recovered or he buys a replacement.

Becker told the summit that cycling is "integral to having a high-quality community."

The summit was devoted to a variety of issues facing cyclists.

No way the mayor rode that POS. Sounds more like his people bought it from wal-mart for him on the day of so that he could appear sensitive to cyclist's issues.

Makes you wonder about the thief. I see better bikes locked up around here all the time that don't get touched.

As a rule, bike thieves don't know the first thing about quality bikes. Probably saw a shiny, new bike with dual sh0nks and thought $$$$$.

Suck it up and buy a new bike don't go crying about it in a press conference.

He probably rode to work once, hated it because his bike is a POS then arranged to have the theft take place as an excuse not to ride.

Uhhh....Becker is trying to make the city more bike friendly and somebody stole his bike, thus uncovering another issue to be adressed.

The guy is trying to make the changes that folks like you want, yet you still try to critisize and do nothing but the odd crit mass when you're in town.

Classy

Because I don't think there are any issues. The only issues are motorists and cyclists who are too self absorbed to work together on the road and share. Vancouver is a perfectly fine place to ride a bike and I'm sure Salt Lake city is too.

I just think people who make big issues out of safety and bike theft are just using them as excuses not to ride and will do anything to avoid pedaling.

For every reason you can think of not to ride a bike I can give you three bigger reasons not to drive. People are just lazy pussies.

That and people who get their bikes stolen are idiots IMO who don't think about how/where they are locking their bikes.

since when did people start calling a cordless drill w/ cutting discs "standard bolt cutters" ?

There is simply no way to chop through a quality U-lock with bolt cutters. Obviously there are ways to get through them but you have to use something better.

Ok, seriously dude I see what you're trying to say. Without looking into too much further though it seems this guy is making a real effort to promote bicycling as a way to commute, and you're bitching?

Yes he is making a real effort. He's willing to do anything to convince people to ride except replace his stolen bike.
