BB spacer to prevent chain falling off
I saw a picture somewhere of something on a bike that looked like an oversized BB spacer ring. It was kind of like a small bash guard on the inside of the granny ring to prevent the chain falling into the frame during the downshift from the middle ring to the granny. Does anyone know what that is and is it useful?

Could be a mount for an e-type front derailleur. Works very well at keeping the chain from falling off the granny when shifting.

![]() Something like this? It is called a Third Eye Chain Watcher, they've been around since the early 90s. I have one on an old steel GT Avalanche. |

Dog Fang is a popular one, there is also the N-Gear Jump Stop.

Without trying to sound like an ass.....is your front derailleur adjusted properly? I've not dropped a chain down the back of a crankset for years and I didn't even know the devices above still existed until recently. They used to be all the rage....along with Sharkfins.

I don't really know! I had one back in the day because everyone else did....and I can only assume that it 'stopped' the chain from sucking between the stay and the tyre if the tyre caught the chain when it was bouncing about. Maybe it worked when chainstays were 35ft long.

k-edge chain catcher
http://www.acecosportgroup.com/shop/...ge-dirt-3.html Sometimes even the perfectly set front derailleur will allow the chain to bounce off if a shift and bump occur at the same time. It also allows you to set the derailleur a little more to the inside to make that shift to the granny more positive.
