I saw a used, AWD, 1994 Land Rover Defender, 147000kms listed at 3500$. Seems to be in pretty good cond. Is this a reasonable price... it almost seems too good...?

what does NSMB think?

Edmunds says $8300 true market value.

The dealer will buy it for $3,500, so it is indeed cheap. Ask what is wrong with it.

its a british vehicle, which means it wont run..

and if by some fluke you manage to get it started, dont EVER turn it off, cuz it wont start again.

Land rover/range rovers has some of the worst resale value. because the quality control of them is pretty abysmal by world standards..

i'd say pass, unless your prepared to foot the expensive repairs bills it will no doubt be hiding...

Some would say the Defender is the exception to that rule. The Defender is the "good" landrover that you typically see National Geographic people driving around in and such. But they're usually in the same price range as a G-Wagon or a Landcruiser. $3500 seems really fishy.

it's $25,000 There's another one that's restored that's $65,000.

If you want a similar vehicle for a really good price (10-12,000 ish) get a Nissan Safari. They'll all be RHD unfortunately, but they're very underpriced right now in North America mainly because people have never heard of them. They have a solid front and rear axle, a 4L Diesel engine that uses timing gears instead of chains. The UN uses them as their transport vehicles, and they're almost identical in performance to the Landcruiser (some people say they're better).

That one has been sitting for months. I walked my dog past it a few times.

Ya, you really need to love Defenders to actually buy one. But people still do oddly enough. Defender/G-wagon/Landcruiser(minus the Prado)/Safari are all practically the same vehicle. The Landcruisers and the Safari's are the cheepest ones and yet they're probably the most reliable, so what the hell are you paying for? If you don't care about the solid front you could pick up the Prado or a Pajero for almost the $3500 that the OP was looking at.

If you really want to drive something sick get a Unimog, you can pick one of those up used for under 10 grand.
