This is what in wrestling is called a "work." It's a narrative angle crafted well in advance, pre-determining heroes and villains (faces and heels in wrestling speak).

What is interesting is that there is no longer any compunction to think of consequences. I actually believe that Palin does not see joining Fox News as an impediment to the White House. On the contrary. And Fox, with their news room generating huge revenues, really does not pretend to be a news organization any more, and so the offering to Palin was inevitable.

They are cynically betting that it no longer matters to anyone, and they could very well be right. Or to look at it another way, they are betting against the American public being upset at Fox's journalistic integrity, and that being on the tee-vee, in the age of Governor Ahnuld, Jesse Ventura, and Rush Limbaugh, is not a problem for a contender for POTUS.

I wouldn't count on that. She quit her job in Alaska in order to improve her national exposure. Fox news is giving her that opportunity, and by hiring her as a contributer, like Mike Huckabee, they're going to be able to control which issues she comments on and which she doesn't, essentially steering her public profile. Absent of any huge gaffes, this is a politicians wet dream.
