1. What was your most challenging, memorable photo shoot?
2. What was your scariest or most difficult photo shoot? 3. What was your wettest, coldest, most damned uncomfortable shoot? 4. Do you remember your first time, your first real action shot -- what made it a great photo for you? 5. Why be a photographer, isn't it like being the bridesmaid and never the bride, always being there for that glorious moment, but still being apart? 6. How do you feel/respond when people refer to your work as "bike porn"? 7. (Here's a variant of the desert island question). If you were stranded on a nunatak, with one bike and one rider, what camera, what lens, and what other one piece of equipment would you want in your camera bag? 8. One piece of advice for the everyrider photographer who wants to take that perfect shot? 9. What does your mom think? 10. Do you do Bar/Bat Mitzvah?

How did you get into mountain bike photography?
How difficult to make a name for yourself in the industry, and what kept you on track? Working along with anthill/the collective, you get to spend some quality time with these guys putting together a film that displays the beauty and essence of the sport. With this new trend in mountain bike films, with such films as Lifecycles coming out this spring, how do you see the future of the artistic side of displaying the sport, in what direction do you see filming and photography going? What is you favorite photo you have taken? Where was you favorite location to shoot? Ok I am going to stop, this really could go on forever. |

Questions for Sterling
Where does your name "Sterling" come from?
Do you believe in reincarnation? If so, what or who would you prefer to be in your next life? Like in mountain biking when you are about to do a gnarly stunt for the first time, do you also envision what the next shot is and execute it without hesitation? |

at this point, what means more to you: riding or filming? does getting an epic shot give more of a rush or are you still hooked on being behind handlebars?

Mountain biking has evolved significantly over the years, we seem to continually be reassessing what's possible vs. what's impossible. How has photographing the sport, especially those responsible for pushing its boundaries, also changed in that time?

SL question
Sterling, have you ever had your name tarnished?
Seriously - Mountain Biking poses some clear challenges for photographers as they often work in low light situations. Many photographers use complex remote flash set-ups to capture sharp but often unrealistic images. What do you think about the heavy use of flashes and what are some of the techniques you employ to make the most of available light? |

Help Me, Sterling!
How do you take pictures of riders getting air without making it look lame? I can't tell you how many times I've scared the cr@p out of myself riding some stunt on the trail only to have the picture make me look like I'm hopping off a curb.
I really started to think about this last summer. I got a picture of me going of Joyride #4 at Whistler. Then I saw a rider from SGC post a picture you snapped of her going off Joyride #2 - and it looked way more sick than mine. Help me, Obi Wan . . . you're my only hope. |

Sterling:
Your pictures are often dominated by unbelievable landscapes. With the style of photography you do, which puts nature in the foreground, how does the rider influence a photograph?

You've captured some great shots of the North shore fog, and riders in motion, managing to get colour definition in the trees and still freeze a rider's motion, any tips or tricks for the aspiring amateurs on how to make a shot like that happen?

How do you capture images to get the viewer looking like they are actually there seeing it with their own eyes and not looking at a photo.

Sterling,
Imagine a plane on the beginning of a massive conveyor belt/travelator type arrangement, as wide and as long as a runway, and intends to take off. The conveyer belt is designed to exactly match the speed of the wheels at any given time, moving in the opposite direction of rotation. There is no wind. Can the plane take off?
