In 2004-2006 the idea was as follows:

Grant Funded projects:
To secure grants pay to work on the multi-use easy trails for everyone. Create easy trails for people to ride that would also be used by hikers, dog walkers etc ( Baden Powell, Bridle Path). This would elevate the profile of the NSMBA to ALL users. Not just mountain bikers and garner everyone's support. As Lee indicated the NSMBA WAS previously successful at aquiring grants.

Marketing and leveraging THIS initiative is what would make the membership grow and encourage more people to support the organization.

Trail days:
Were to focus on the popular trails to get the majority of riders who ride these trails involved and to focus work on the heavily used trails. This too would elevate the profile of the NSMBA to the majority of riders. Most riders found out about trail days from posters posted at trailheads etc.

Individual Trail Builders:
The more difficult trails tended to have people already adopting them. The NSMBA was to support these builders to continue building the challenging lines by supplying them tools, work parties for larger projects and to garner support for them from the landowners. If it was discovered that individuals or groups were going in and doing 'unauthorized' work, the NSMBA should attempt to contact them to bring them into the fold and seeing if they can work on the challenging lines to keep them maintained instead of just letting the landowners go in and tear down their work without notice.

Good thread but do a search and you'll find this topic is becoming a

Wow that seems like a good idea... a possible blueprint for 2010?

You can't use the numerals 2, 0, 1 and 0 in that order. The year 2010(TM) is owned entirely and trademarked by VANOC. All future references to 2010(TM) must include the (TM) reference and a disclaimer evidencing ownership of the trademarked year.

well there's your solution right there. have vanoc appropriate the nsmba and then they'll have access to millions courtesy of the taxpayers.

Reverend: post up the survey on NSMBA. Posting here will just yield the same responses as previous years (as mentioned by Sharon above). This will give you (a) an idea of how many people visit the NSMBA site and (b) a broader range of responses, since many NSMBA members are not posters on NSMB.

I am assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that the above statement is made "tongue in cheek". However, the idea may not seem as far fetched perhaps.
Think about it: this, I believe, private, unelected(i.e.in a public sense)body(i.e.IOC and its "agent" VanOC), etc. has managed to tap into the public's (i.e. taxpayer's) purse and carrry out its mission with incredible sucess. So what is their secret? Find out and then adapt for NSMBA, as applicable.

It may have been said before, but I think for an organization like NSMBA the priority should be to solicit volunteer help (at all levels) from capable individuals who are willing to meaningfully contribute with their unique skill set.

Perhaps the goal should be to increase NSMBA's strength through increased participation... take it one step at a time.

A couple of musings from the peanut gallery...

Don't try to pigeonhole the Shore. Whenever people from other areas come here, they are always asking for smoother, or easier, or drier, or more like home.

Making trails that don't suit the geography of the area is stupid. If the mountain provides some terrain that's blue, then by all means develop that resource. On the flip side, making trails that are all wood on steep hillsides can result in more maintenance than mountain biking. The challenge on the Shore is to balance the demands of the terrain against the resources of the community. Given the geography and climate of the Shore, there will never be an abundance of easy trails. So be it.

Want easy? Try Scotland...I hear they give you cupcakes when you ride there.

There is lots of funding available for paid trail work BUT....

...there's a catch. The trails have to be legit. Therefore if you want to get paid trail crews out there, activity directed towards advocacy is kind of mandated.

Trail maintenance days and the Ripper series were things that I really looked forward to when I was on the Shore. They brought people together and the trails benefitted. Plus I think it provided some motivation for builders to be active in the scene. Good lines of communication and all that. That culture of volunteerism was really strong a couple of years ago, has that changed?

The base and mid level of volunteer people are still here and willing. There has been a bit of a mess behind the curtain.

Transition of control or direction has been anything but smooth and free flowing.

The NSMBA needs to just get back to basics. Work on the current trails, raise the base amount of funds needed to cover that, if and when issues come up with land use be a conduit of information and rally the troops.

Yea I never understood why people would want to go there and ride easy trails. I think the idea of 'learning how to ride something by practicing' is being lost. Take advantage of technicality you guys have and make the most of it. If you get whining from people who just want their hands held through life then take that as a compliment.
