I think they're confused on the definition of weapon. Intent is what makes a knife a weapon not the simple fact that it is a knife.

With intent a pencil can become a weapon. Better ban those too.

The problem is, it has the opposite effect. You tell people that they can't use a fork because it could be a weapon, and all of a sudden, they realise 'Hey! I could stab someone with this'.

A good example of that is the word 'fuck'. The only reason that it has any meaning or power is because we try to supress it's use because it's bad. If we were raised to believe that it was just another word, then it probably wouldn't be used as much.
