Suggestion on brakes and wheels
I need new brakes and wheels for my Santa Cruz Bullit, it's the 2004-model. I ride mostly DH with it. I don't want the cheapest stuff out there but I'm not looking to buy Deemaxs or anything like that. I'm currently running a Hayes purple and HFX-mag and Doublewides (heavily dented
). I've been looking at the Avid Code 5 and Juicy 5 and 7, but also at the new Saint Brakes. For wheels I have no idea, all I know it must be 135mm with 10mm axle in the back and 20mm up front (got a 888RC -05).Has anyone tried the Avid brakes? Are they any good? Service-friendly? |

I like my codes, they are solid brakes. and fairly easy to work with. Never really run into issues.
729ex's might be good for ya... not too expensive and pretty sturdy. definitly wont dent as easily as DWs

Brakes: I run Avid J-7's & love 'em. The new Saint's look great, but worth the extra $? Don't know.
Wheels: I have had incredibly good luck with Bontrager Big Earl wheels. There are a bunch of used sets around for cheap and I have absolutely battered mine for a couple of seasons with not so much as a whimper. (OK, I got 1 ding from a high speed Ned's run when I slammed a rock.) I 2 years I have had them trued 1 time and they are still straight & strong. |

Avid brakes have a nice feel and are undeniably powerful but Shimano are certainly more reliable. For that reason I'd buy Shimano, maybe SLX with 203mm rotors if you want decent power but without spending too much money. It's also much easier to change pads with Shimano's open backed caliper design.
As for wheels, if you are in Sweden and Hope and Mavic products are cheaper (well, compared to here....) then Mavic 721 or 729 on Hope Pro2s would be a sweet wheelset. Buying Bontrager wheels is a good way of getting DT Swiss hubs for less money. |

The new XTs are enough to stop a demo 8 and my 190 pound self on a dime.

Avid for all your braking needs. Decent price and great feel. XTs seem a bit grabby to me

^ while you can get Juicy/Code to have pretty good modulation, XT/XTR 's modulation is miles ahead.

Have you considered a set of Hope brakes? Just another option.
