Schley and Tippie talk snow and Dirt

I wonder why we don't see more athletes sponsored for more than one sport? Or perhaps it's surprising, given the level of commitment required - that there are any at all? Who are some other dual sport sponsored athletes you know of?

Article here...

Back in the day John Cardiel was 'The Man' in both skateboarding and snowboarding - he may have been the first athlete to win Skateboarder of the year and Snowboarder of the year in the same year... Now of course that guy is Shaun White...

nice article.I love that sandboarding picture of tippie - that's where he decided to try and carve bikes down sand, cos he did it on a snowboard and thought why not?* I love the kamloops helmet (the mullet!) Brett gives'er harder on the bike or board more than anyone I know, always with a smile, a whoop and a cackle and is the nicest person I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.*

I love you Brett!

it seems as though some new athletes have found success with biking and rally car racing. people like travis pastrana, nico v, dave mirra. But some of those just switched sports, without maintaining both. I think a lot of the athletes are capable of doing more sports, but to be competitive now, maybe they have to just focus on one at a time to keep up at the top of the game.

I feel that it is pretty tough to the be at the top of two sports. Generally, to be the best at anything you need a remarkable amount of skill but at the same time you need to put the most effort/time into it ( at least for the long term). By being in two sports it seems that after a long enough amount of time you will become mediocre in both of them. Schley is a perfect example, he is a great skier and bike rider but has never been that exiciting in either of them. Shaun White kind of had to put his skateboarding on the backburner to achieve the results he has had in snowboarding. Michael Jordan attempted to go to baseball and that was just fucking embarassing.

What about Shaun Palmer? Palm crosses over sports in a pretty seamless manner....

Palmer was an exception but also the sports he was in were in its infancy.

Sage and the Collins brothers could be in that group if they cared enough to get sponsored for biking. Those guys kill it on bikes.

There are several people I can think of that have done well as pros in both sports, including Chris Del Bosco and Ryan Sutton, but I wouldn't say either one is at the top of either sport.

Dual Athletes

Luke Nelson from Fernie would be another athlete...except that Luke is so low key most people would not know who he is, that and he's only 19, so too most he's just "Luke who?".

In mid April he placed 4th at the World Free ski Championship, backing up his 4th place from the previous year, not to mention the great results he had through the ISF Free-ski tour this year. For Winter stuff he's supported by Faction Skis, but lacks a Summer "ride", other then his local shop the Guides Hut.

In the biking world Luke Races, but only cause that seems to be the only place to get a little recognition these days. As a friend of his, I'd say Rampage would be 110% his cup of tea because he has a pristine ability to ride the sketchiest most "non-rideable" terrain and make it look ridiculously easy. Luke is involved in a VERY substantial amount of the trail network growth in Fernie as he's employeed by the City of Fernie to build trails...and he's damn good at it.

Being a buddy of his I'd love to see a bike company step-up to sponsoring Luke, other then his hook-ups with the Guides Hut in Fernie...but Luke isn't all that much into self promotion, he'd rather just show up, kill everything, eat his homemade lunch and call it a day.

If you've ever skiied with Luke you'd understand...he's just one of those guys that makes the most ridiculous line look easy.

So there ya go Cam...another Dual-sport Canadian Athlete on the verge of making something happen. I'm sure once he's in his 20's his abilities will begin to emerge more in the Media for action sports in Canada.
