Bear Rehab Center on Mt Fromme?

Soooo, what's the scoop? This story says the area will be 32 hectares and off limits to the public. Will this affect any mtb trails?

"Ken Macquisten, managing director for the Grouse Mountain Refuge For Endangered Wildlife, said the program calls for minimal contact between bears and humans."

I seriously doubt they'd put a refuge anywhere near a trail. It's probably up at the top, near Grouse.

This sounds like a good thing to me. How many bears do we shoot every year because of our own stupidity (putting garbage out the night before)?

Yah, cuz grouse mountain resorts ltd. has pioneered bear rehab in that enclosure on the ski hill. Lol.

Not to run them or you down lady g, but this 32 hectare facility had better do things different than the zoo at the top of the hill does right now, or as a taxpayer and an animal lover, i will be right pissed off.

Thats great that they're funding a rehab center, but why on a mountain just a few km from the city thats littered with recreational trails? The only side of Fromme that is not used for recreation is the north side. Would it not be better for humans and bears if this were located someplace a little more remote? Put it in the Cap Valley since its closed to the public anyway.

32 hectares is roughly .5km x .5km. Thats pretty big. I bet this closes trails. Probably not bike trails, but the ones that run up to the peak.

Agreed, Fromme isn't the best place for them to achieve there directive.

What does this have to do with Fromme though? As I understand it, the current 'zoo' is run by grouse mountain resorts ltd. The newly proposed area will be handled by the same, with funding doled out by a Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation set up and stocked with 400k of government money.

What are you talking about? The only info I'm finding from any of the links provided is that this facility will be an extension of CritterCare and that it will be on Fromme.

http://www2.news.gov.bc.ca/news_rele...026-000786.htm

I haven't read any linkage to the grouse mountain 'zoo' - got a link?
