First Look - Santa Cruz Driver 8

I haven't seen any other review of the Santa Cruz Driver 8 - but Connor Mcleod has been riding a nice bright green one for a couple of weeks.

Here's what he thinks so far...

Looks great, i like the details like grease ports and double bearings in the important places.

But is it supposed to be a "do everything" bike? The frame (even more with this parts spec) gives the impression of a pure bred bikepark/play/stunt-bike.

I am waiting to see some reviews of long term hard riders before i make up my mind on a new frame
its either this frame or the marin 7.9

Nice review looks like a good spec

The action shots are a lot more flattering than the shots SC put out originally. I have to agree with Timer though, the marketing and the spec/geo on the bike still seem confused to me, and for that reason, it's one of the bikes I would love to throw my leg over.
$3k for an ano frame with shock though! Ouch.

I wouldn't agree on the hike it up part unless you want to hit the test of metal. It has good post extension, and is a great pedaller. The pedalling position is very good as well.

Seriously? This is nothing more than a downhill bike. Road cassette?

despite my love for 1x9, IMO it's not a do everything bike unless you can put a front derailleur on it... if so, i presume it's an e-type?... scott/steed, can you confirm?

Based on how stupidly light the Nomad and V10 frames are, i'm betting a high end Shore build could be in the 35-37lb range...

I agree, it's marketted as a do-all FR bike, and they spec a road cassette with no option to put a Front derailleur on.

Hammerschmidt is your climbing option, or the sandwich-plate with a granny on the outside, or you just plain Mark Weir it!

Sorry Kperras it is not a DH bike, the spec may be similar, and maybe in the review some issues might come up with the spec like the size of the front ring, and the use of the road cassette. But it does not ride like a V10, which really points out the difference between a DH bike and a freeride bike.

I don't think it is as do everything as a Nomad, but it is a multi-use freeride bike. it's main focus is durability, and the focus is on suspension performance so there is a limit to its climbing due to the ring choice, and the limits of the rider.

What a heap of crock - that's not an all mountain climbing bike.

I'm kinda keen on it. I'm on my 2nd 'free at the moment, but would like something that's a little more DH.

I've been using the 'free for pretty much everything, from DH racing to trail riding to 80km XC epics with 2000m of climbing. And it's damned fun on all of them. But it would be nice to have something slightly more gravity-oriented with a lower BB and centre of gravity. And since I'm building up a 5.spot as a trail bike, I would be able to compromise on the do-everything-including-up if the gravity-assisted part was better than my 'free.

Or maybe I should just hang out until next year and get a new DHR
