i'm pretty damn sure no one owns the waters out there i think its liek simpsons portrayted it but there might be different legeslation rights out there so i say do a search on oogly googly and u should be able to find the answer

i was kinda wondering that too...
here's what i learneded in history the other day:
in the cuban missile crisis the USA ended up surrounding Cuba to prevent more Soviet ICBM's(inter-continental-ballistic-missiles) from entering cuba which severely threatened the US's security. yada yada...
anyways since the waters far out from cuba are international waters, and these are the same water's that the USA occupied and intercepted ships,demanding to search the Soviet ships,wouldn't that mean that either:
a)the USA (once again) cast the law out the window to save their asses.
or
b)if a country is threatened it is allowed to occupy international waters

dunno if that helped at all...i'd kinda like to figure it out too,and my lazy ass pot smoking history teacher didn't know the answer

they are international its like space you can do whatever you want there are no rule, america didnt break any laws in doing the naval blockade, the ussr on the other hand broke a few by doing what it did

as a marine officer you would think i would know that,but since i work in the engine room and have nothing to do with navigation, well i don't.

i do know that the IMO(international maritime organization www.imo.org )does govern alot that goes on.they are a branch of the united nations incase you were wondering.

actually in most parts of the world, if your in international waters and you get in trouble, your pretty much on your own.the canadian and U.S. coast gaurds wouldn't have to respond if you got in trouble in int. nat. waters. either,although they likely would.later b
