Another spinal cord injury ...

Strange timing for the Wings of Life auction.

I haven't seen any mention of it here, but a rider was injured up in the interior a few weeks ago: slipped on a frosty ladder bridge and had a high cervical (neck) fracture, and is unfortunately paralyzed. The level is high enough that he is on a ventilator to breath. He was riding with buddies, and they kept him alive by breathing for him for 2 hours until he was rescued. It's early yet, and we can only hope he sees some recovery.

Be careful out there, everyone.

Always ride with a buddy.

Consider getting -- and using -- one of those braces, like the ones that the Wings of Life is auctioning off.

I've been riding with one of the Leatt braces this year, and have found it comfortable and don't find it gets in the way. The moto guys are using these a lot.

Why am I using one? I didn't find out about these until a week AFTER my son fractured his neck up on Boogie Man. Fortunately, he survived, and with the help of NSMBA and others, is doing well. Some of you know John.

Think about it. Costs a lot less than that next bike part you covet, and will potentially avert a devastating injury.

..Mike

It's a good product that lots of DH racers are using... and endorsing.

Don't forget the other brace by 661 or whoever that does the same thing but is MUCH cheaper.

That is sad news indeed.

Thanks for the reminder Mike.

Riders often say they only need something like this when riding flat out or during DH racing. However, shit happens all the time and often at the most unexpected moments, as per the sad story above.

Mike; I believe you are in the medical profession, so I presume you feel a brace like the Leatt would/could have likely prevented that type of injury?

I have looked at the Leatt braces a few times but at a cost in the range OF $400-600 it has been too much. Conner posted a link to a new product made by EVS, which is $175, which I would strongly consider.

http://bb.nsmb.com/showthread.php?t=107927

Mike did you buy the Moto-GPX, and did you purchase it in Canada?

I would like the chance to try one or both of these products out to see if they are restrictive in any way.

Anyone seen a comparison between the Leatt and EVS products. The Leatt seams to have the reputation of being the best product in the market. True or not so much? It looks like the Leatt would limit forward deflection more than the EVS, but would this restrict downward vision?

This is the Leatt Moto-GPX

This is the EVS RC-Evolution

Do you have any thoughts on this Mike? Thanks.

You can demo it ...

I guess you saw me using this in our EB sessions...

I first saw this last year, and called the Alberta distributors: http://www.leatt-brace.ca/

They were happy to send me one to demo, since there wasn't a dealer here in Vancouver then.

I tried it with my previous helmet and found I had trouble getting my head far enough back when riding down steeps, and trying to look up. With my new helmet this year (a TLD) I had no trouble. I picked up this year's brace before I got the helmet to make sure they were compatible. The back of some helmets is smaller than others, and you need to try your helmet with the brace to see if it fits. The brace is very adjustable, but designed for motorcyle riders (see their website: have been some pretty amazing crashes where these appear to have done what we want them to do.) I believe they are working on a DH bike brace, which is why they had sponsored Cedric Gracia this year. (Although I don't recall seeing any pics of him using it at Red Bull Rampage.)

There are other braces coming into the market. Leatt was the ground breaker, and has done the research.

I have found it very comfortable. If you wear chest armour you have to be able to fit the chest braces and shoulder "wings" under the armour. Doesn't like to sit on top, since it ends up being too high. I have seen ads for chest protection that states it's Leatt compatible, so I think that is being thought about too.

You might still have my email from the EB sessions: feel free to email me, or PM me; if you can't get one to demo, I'm happy to lend you mine to try out.

To answer one of my own questions, I found this comparison between the Leatt and EVS;

http://www.e-dirt.co.za/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=7258

Some of our Moto brethern (Wayne?) might be interested also.

Also Leatt have come out with a new model called the adventure at a cost of $195.

Yeah, that's when I first started to look at these things in earnest. Thank-you very much for your offer to try it out. If I do decide to pull the trigger, I will give you a shout.

PS are there any BC/Vancouver distributors yet? DOH! see next post.

This looks pretty bling:

Healing vibes to the rider down. You never know, Leatt braces might become a standard just like a full-face helmet has.

Hey Cam, any chance of getting some riders out on these braces to give us a long-term test before the 09 bike park season? I think a lot of people are curious about their effectiveness, weight, fit, comfort, whether or not they're restrictive, helmet compatibility, etc. These are big-ticket items that many people are considering - surely the manufacturers would appreciate the exposure.

I know I'd like an in-depth look!

I'm also curious whether the extra support might just move that crash energy to a different place? Though I can't imagine a place worse than the neck or spine...

Healing vibes to the injured!
