Avid Juicy 7 or Magura louise or?...
Oh wise board members pease help me choose...applcation is a freeride bike with a manitou travis, therefore a 8" front rotor with the "hayes style" mounting is required. As I understand the consensus is the juicys are noisy but very good, and marura louise owners seem quite happy. I'm currently running hayes 8" so either should be a huge upgrade. I am in search of modulation and improved power over the hayes. Cost is always an issue as my hayes work fine so dropping $400 on gustafs is not real justifiable in my mind.

juicy 7 are amazing. they have very nice modulation, and ample amount of power. But the power is much weaker compared to Code, but weighing 176 w/o gear, i find it ample.
I haven't tried magura. edit: people who first use Juicy find that they don't have any modulation, because it's sooo much stronger it feels grabby, but in reality, juicys have great modulation after break in, and adjustment. it only makes noise when it is wet, in dry it is fine. And it's not even that loud. You can get rid of the noise by using a different type of pad. Last edited by J-Kwon; 07-03-2008 at 08:12 PM. |

I've tried both. HAnds down the Louise is superior. Check the buy and sell board - e-dids has a set for sale

I snagged some Saints for $96 per on www.chainlove.com a couple of weeks ago. Levers, calipers and rotors included - pre bled even. They replaced my '05 Louise's, only because they used expensive odd sized rotors and were a bit finicky to align with spacers etc. The new Louise's use 203 rotors which are much cheaper to replace.
Modulation seems pretty similar so far, Saints have a bit less power, but I hear the pads just take longer to break in...

I was using some Juicy 5's and swore by them...then my new bike came with some Magura Louise brakes and I was very skeptical...but my god I love these brakes....I don't think I would go back to Juicies.

i wouldn't even look at the Juicy's.
to me they don't feel half as nice in terms of modulation and then there's all the problems people have with them making noise/shuderring that still seems around even on new brakes. |

I am in love with my new Louises.
At first it took some time to get used to the lever shape, but thats not an issue anymore. Tons of modulation and power.

nice...and sure enough the guy selling his has sold and the other guy selling his set wont return my PM and his phone number wont work. Looks like I'll have to buck up and spend $400+ on a brakeset if i want them this season.

Well I picked up a set of louise FR with 203mm rotors and hit up seymour, top to bottom. Holy shit, they are powerful indeed. With prolonged descending i used to get arm pump but not with the louise, no hand fatigue whatsoever. I do have a concern and that is lever ergonomics. If I set up the lever blade position where I like, the resting position of the lever is too far from the bar and is awkward to reach, and there is a fair bit of lever travel before engaging. The adjustments are maxed out and I guess thats how they are out the box? I hope I get used to it because I am stoked about the performance.

i added a gustav front caliper to my louise setup and the power is silly... i also tried a set of juicys on another bike to see what the hype was about and although they seemed great on the first handfull of rides and are less trouble than my old louises to get dialed, they have noticeably less power.
regarding lever reach setup, the juicys are sweet in that the lever can be adjusted to have a very short throw and be very close to the bars whereas i also don't like the way out there levers of the louise... i'm going to buy some longer reach adjustment bolts to try and get them closer. |

I hope they're better than the 05 and 07 XT's (I hated both sets). They just didn't
feel right to me. I preferred the Hayes nines to the 05's and I traded my new 07's for a new set of Juicy 5's and love them (I got them to be quiet...for now).
