I am probably going to be told very quickly that I am doing it wrong, but I use a program called filecroc. You install the program and then search for torrents on sites like mininova.org. When you find a torrent you want to download you download and open it, then filecroc will manage the download from there. There is more to know than that, but it should get you started.

I use utorrent, It takes up hardly any space and does the job. Make sure to set up port forwarding and adjust the upload bandwidth accordingly.

Yes, get rid of bittorrent ASAP and switch to utorrent. Make sure you port forward if nothing is happening. (Go to Portforward.com)

Hey Jake,
I emailed this to a buddy a few months ago maybe some of this will help: In order to download a file from a torrent, you need a BitTorrent client. Nowadays, you have many choices; such as BitTorrent (the original), Azureus, Bitcomet, Bitlord, uTorrent etc BitTorrent is the most basic and probably the easiest to use. I have also used uTorrent which is also easy and is a stand alone program that you don't need to install, just use as is. One major advantage with uTorrent is that you can enable encryption which should help counter torrent throttling by your ISP. Once you have installed the program you need to find a torrent for the movie , game or music file you want. So you need to go to a torrent search site. Some of the best are found here: http://thepiratebay.org/ http://www.mininova.org/ At the piratebay site there is a help file to help you with bittorrents, go here: http://thepiratebay.org/help My brief tutorial is: 1) go to Pirate Bay: http://thepiratebay.org/ 2) Click on the link for top 100 : http://thepiratebay.org/top 3) Click on Total Top 100 (it's in green): http://thepiratebay.org/top/all 4) you will see a list of torrents. Try downloading the torrent for The.Bourne.Ultimatum[2007DVDrip[Eng]-axxo: http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3865650/...%5BEng%5D-aXXo or any other movie you like the look of. Tip 1 - any torrent by axxo from Pirate Bay or MiniNova will be a very good quality movie (may not be the real deal at other torrent sites!)! Tip 2 - check out the comments posted by others about the torrent that you find on the torrent download page to gauge how good the torrent is. Trust me, torrents from the likes of axxo, FXG, FXM, Diamond etc are usually excellent! 5) Click on the green link that says DOWNLOAD THIS TORRENT 6) Hopefully you saved the torrent to your desktop or somewhere else you can easily find it. 7) Open Bittorrent or uTorrent Under file, select open torrent and find the torrent on your desktop. Double click it and it should load into the torrent cleint(or you can just double click the torrent on your desktop and torrent client should auto start if you do not have any other torrent program such as microtorrent, bitloard, azureus etc) . 9) Wait a few minutes and you should see it start to download, it should get faster and faster up to a certain maximum depending on your connection speed, and it will give you a percentage to go etc. With a fast connection and movies that a lot of people are seeding you can download in 3-6 hours. Some movies may take a couple of days, depending on the file size. Once downloaded at 100%, find where the movie is saved, to play it. To seed the film so others can download it, leave it in the torrent client for a little while , say for a couple of days, so that you give back or until you reach a ration of at least 100-150%. If we all leech torrents and do not seed them back, the system does not work. After you have seeded for a while, right click on the torrent that says 100% complete and click delete or remove to remove the torrent from the Torrent client, and stop further seeding. Move the movie from the default folder and save elsewhere on your system. For increased protection against agencies snooping on your download via torrents use Peer Guardian 2. http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/ Not sure it's available for Vista yet. Please note, that most movies you download will be in the AVI format. However, some others may be split and compressed into archived RAR files, that are similar to zipped files. You will need a program like WinRar (version 3.71) to be able to open and join all the separate rar files into the original movie (unpack and archive). Most of the movies that you download will be of the following type - moviename.avi, and Windows media player may not be able to play them without the right codec. Most internet avi movies are encoded using something called DivX or Xvid. So you will need to download ( http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/ ) and install the codec for the movie to play. Please note, I do not know if Divx is supported under Vista yet. You will need to do some research. Also, some movies require the Dolby AC3 sound codec. You will be able to see the movie but not hear any sound if you do not have this codec installed. This codec can be found here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/AC3_Filter.htm just download and install the fill called AC3 Filter. Again I'm not sure how of if this will work under Vista. A good program to check what codecs the movie file requires is called Gspot, you can find it here and it is compatible with Vista 32 bit. http://www.headbands.com/gspot/v26x/index.htm This shows you how to use Gspot if the movie does not play etc: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/v26x/quick_start.html Some of the better quality Hires movies are now coming out in the Mp4 format, which WMP will not play. One way you may get around all this bother is to play movies using VLC player, which seems to be able to play most movie formats (including MP4) you will encounter on the web or download. One last thing, make sure your upload speed to set to a relatively low level (go into settings and adjust to something like 20-60 KB/s and keep an eye on the total upload and download volumes you do or you may/will get a call from your ISP. Shaw is capped at 60GB down and 6 GB up I think. HTH
