us travel - passports?

do kids absolutely need a passport to fly to the us (hawaii), or alternately cuba, the bahamas, or mexico?
i'm not sure of the new regulations, but if it means not going through the hassle of getting alicia a passport, i'm lazy so that will affect where we go away next month.
we flew to mexico before without one and had no problems, but i'm not sure if/how much things have changed now that we are all (including cute little 11yr olds) prospective terrorists.
thanks.

Security's gone up lately.

I travelled to Mexico in September and they were checking children for ID and passport both ways.

yes they need a passport.

Dunno about the other countries you listed, but if you have to transfer in the states to get there, then again you will need a passport for the kids.

We had to get a passport for our 2.5 month old so we could enter the states during Xmas - so yes, she will need a passport.

ugh. i wish there was a simple answer, every website says something different.
but sounds like hawaii is out, although we go to the states almost every week (driving), and they rarely even ask for her bc. they also asked for NOTHING in cancun last time we went. i think mexico is our safest bet.
i'd get the passport, but can't find her long bc, and will take a week for that, then the passport, and we'd like to go asap.
if anyone knows something i don't, please post.

the rules are a LOT diff for driving across than for flying.

IMO you're risking a lot of headaches if you decide to fly to the US w/out one ...

Yes. Driving to the states only requires valid government issued ID (e.g. driver's license, birth certificate). Flying to the States (and this includes if your flight has any stopover/transfers at any US airport) requires a passport.

Moral of the story, get passports for everyone in the family ASAP, regardless of travel plans. Then you're ready no matter where you're headed.

Oh, and Cuba you definitely need a passport. Just there last month.

ya there would be no stopovers to either mexico or cuba... only going for a week so direct flight is one definite requirement.

i guess it really depends on the mood of the govt official... last 4/5 times down they haven't asked for ANY id for alicia. it kind of bugs me as i could so easily be kidnapping her.

mexico... same thing.
didn't ask for any id for her, but i guess they are just happy to have us spend our money, wether we are kidnappers, terrorists, drug dealers, or just bored milfs.

either way i'll get her passport for future trips. new rules suck though.

don't need a passport for land crossing so book from bellingham or seattle and drive over (for hawaii)

or fly direct to mexico without a US stopover, and obviously for cuba you wouldn't go through the US

so all 3 are 100% doable without a pasaporte

Wasn't there a story of some entire family (Cdn I'm fairly sure) about a flight that had to make an emergengy landing in the states, they didn't have passports or something, so they were sent to some detention camp for months under the states' crazy new laws? That'd sure ruin your vacation.
