Looks like Bush pulled up his trousers, so he gets more standover clearance with the bigger bike
![]() Bad move from Niner. If Assholes get bikes for free, why should we bother spend our earned cash on them ![]() Seriously, I dont think that this will give Niner a better reputation. Greetings Znarf btw: I ordered a 2011 Stumpjumper FSR 29er Comp, should be with me shortly. I will post a report on here. |

Just to add a fresh perspective...
I work in a bike shop around Dallas Texas. I was recently told that ALL of our high end hardtails will be 29'ers in 2011. Now, I thought that was crazy at first, but for around here, it makes complete sense. And high end hardtails arent that big of a market, so its not as shocking as it sounds really. 5 inch travel full suspension bikes remain to be very popular around here, and with new options like the Specialized Camber and the Trek Fuel EX5, its hard not to spend the extra hundred or two bucks for a full suspension bike. And low end 29'ers suck nuts because they are so heavy. The low end recreational bikes remains to be 26" wheeled bikes. The 29'er trend is here to stay with the types of trails in our area. Old guys love 29'ers All three of my bikes use 26" wheels. I have ridden a couple 29'ers and see the benefit, but dont really appreciate it with my riding style.

All this rolling over crap is pure BS. There would be no such thing as 29'ers if all bikes with 26" wheels didn't have stupid head angles.
They're just for ex roadies who can't ride for shit.

Just had my first ride on a 29er. A Fisher Rumblefish in Moab. I actually enjoyed the big wheels. The flexiness of the rims and fork not so much. As long as the trail was flowy and the bike remained grounded it was actually pretty good. Anything ledgy that involved drops was fucking horrifying.
I could see how someone whose bike experience was crappy hardtails might think 29ers rolled better, more easily over stuff. But compared to my Delirium this bike was seriously scary. This 29er was the least surefooted bike I have ever ridden - but I might say this of any comparable XC bike. At this point I think I'm commenting more on the XC components not being strong enough for the 250-odd lbs of 6'6" me than the wheel size. I'd probably consider a 29er if the rims were burlier and you could run a Fox 36 or something comparable. But at that point I suspect the wheels would be so heavy as to be seriously detrimental to ride quality. I enjoyed the ride, and my technique adapted easily enough. Maybe one day. But for now, no sale.

Have you seen the Rocky's ad with Smooth Wade on a 29...riding roots on the Shore?

Anyone who doesn't think 29ers will be the default HT and high end trailbikes in a few years is nuts.

i can see 29ers working for some people in some conditions and some locales but, holy shit, i've ridden a few of these things on local trails and, each time, it felt like i was riding a cyclocross bike on trails that demanded something other than what i was on. the only one that i'll give a pass on is the SC tallboy, but that's b/c i haven't ridden it. 29ers can have their niche and everybody in the industry can orgasm over how they ride but, please don't tell me how much i need one of these things and how much betterer they are than a 26" rig. i've tried them and they're not better for me, as i suspect they aren't for many out there. |

I think if all mountainbike trails were like the North Shore, even Gary Fisher wouldn't be all excited about 29ers. There are few places in the world that has trails like we have. Bigger wheels are probably more relevant for places we see pictures off with pretty much buffed out smooth high speed singletrack with few bumps no roots no turns to speak of. I think that is more common. For me at 5'5" I think bigger wheels will not be optimal.
