Tony Stewart.

Well, I am a very casual racing fan and very little as far as sprint cars.

While the driver was foolish to leave his car and approach Stewart's car, this seems to me, like it was entirely avoidable from Stewart's side.

Very tragic.

Tragic indeed. Poor judgement from Stewart. Interesting to see how this will play out.

For those of you unfamiliar with Sprint cars, these cars do not have a traditional transmission as we know it - they have one gear. You start the motor, then flip a lever (I think it allows fluid into the torque converter) and that is "go". You stay on the gas with minimal braking or the car stalls. So, Tony was trying to drive around that guy, you can see he tries to turn and gun it (you can hear that part), but on dirt, well, there isn't a lot of traction to avoid someone running at you. Tragic indeed.

Again, sprint newb so very little knowledge on them but can't help but think he could have stopped, swerved hard left or got out of the way somehow. Hell, hitting another car is preferable. Hearing the engine gun tells me it wasn't the greatest decision on Stewart's part.

I suppose its the sum of a series of poor decisions on both parts. Tony's temper is no secret and the lunacy of Ward seems apparent.

Very heavy stuff.

Having read a little more on the subject, I gather that the bulk of steering in these beasts is more by throttle than steering wheel. Its also apparent that visibility on the high side is very limited due to tire size and camber.

Couple that with the fact that Ward was out of his car (unheard of and fueled by 20 yr old rage and adrenaline),and dressed in black during a night race, this looks to add up to a perfect storm of tragic events ending a very young career the hard way.

Some crazy, crazy shit. Be interesting to see the impact on sprint racing moving forward.

read some where the driver in front of Stewart kept the same high line and just avoided the driver as well , stupid move for anyone to head to the center of a track during a race with traffic coming .

the cars dont even have a starter...you get in them, pull the t-handle to lock it into gear, get pushed off (usually by a crazed guy in a tricked out pick-up) and once you get up to a set speed and the rears are rolling you turn on the fuel and hit the switch...you can drop it out of gear and keep the motor running (usually for checking exhaust temps and idle speed and that sort of thing) but once you've done that and shut it down you have to lock it back into gear and push it backwards to expel the unburnt fuel out of the cylinders before you push off to be started.

typically you have been 3-1/2" and 6" of rear wheel stagger (circumference difference) and around 1-1/2" to 3" on the fronts. With the wing slid forward it's really hard to see anything near the right front and from the pictures it look liked they had it slammed pretty far forward and with a hefty angle of attack. I'm not tall - just under 6' - and when I sat in one of the cars I could barely see anything. Couple that with the injector stack and there isnt a lot of visibility

You really do steer them with your right foot..and not sure what the rules are for that series but for dirt you typically only had a brake on the right side for the fronts so you could set the car into the corner quicker and let it roll over onto the right rear.

I worked on sprint cars for about 4 years after I left the NASCAR world. They are unforgiving cars when you make mistakes and they dont leave a lot of room for error when you're driving them (regardless of what it looks like)

It's truly tragic. Any incident like this is a terrible loss for the sport and I'm truly saddened by the news.

I am sure the jury of public opinion will be working on this for a while and Stewart may want to lay low, BUT WTF was that guy thinking? Stewart probably could have done more to avoid him, but if you don't get out of the way from fast oncoming cars you only have yourself to blame.
