out of town olympic hype?

Here in Vancouver the olympic craze is rearing, but whats it like out of town and out of country? is it just me or does it seem as if British Columbians and stephan colbert are the only ones who seem to know that the games are about to start and/or care.

Talked to relatives in France and they didnt even know the olympics were in vancouver, the summer games are HUGE, but the winter ones seem to have no ....followers.

thoughts?

I started a new class of students last week and they were asking where I was from. I wanted to make it a guessing game so I said I was from the country that was hosting the next olympics.

Thoughtful silence followed by "oohhh you're from London!" So I said "next winter olympics"

followed by: "They have Olympics in the winter? Isn't it too cold?"

I was in ontraio not too long ago and everyone there seems to be really stoked on the olympics, unlike here where it's though to find people who are.

I can see the rest of the country being aware of the games, but the media keeps saying lots of foreigners , other than athletes and their crews, will flood vancouver. I kinda doubt international tourists see the winter games a big attraction. I don't think the tourists will come.

Some countries are winter olympic countries, some are summer olympic countries.

I could see lots of tourist coming from Russia, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland etc...

but yes the winter olympics don't carry nearly the same amount of global popularity as the summer ones.

There aren't even nearly as many events in the winter olympics. Top countries in the summer olympics can win over 100 medals yet in the Olympic top countries win ... 24? Germany was tops in 2006 with 29 medals.

I know out in Ontario the people I talked with actually like the mascots.

Most people over here in Germany are aware that the Olympics will be held soon and by now most should've figured out that they'll be in Vancouver. All TV stations that will be broadcasting them have been advertising the Olympics in Vancouver for quite a while now. I even watched an hour-long documentary about Vancouver and Whistler last night.
I definitely wouldn't call it hype but it's not like no one knows what's going on either.

I know a guy that gets to run with the torch in or near PG and if it wasn't for that no one I know would be talking about it. Hell, people I talk to don't even plan on watching it except for some hockey.

The aussie TV channel that has the rights is blaring it to the world. I've noticed it but possibly only because it reminds me of how much I miss living in Van every time I see the ads.

The tourch came trhough here on monday. A pile of people showed up to see it. Not really a whole lot of hype, but people seem to be excited.

I was in Ontario at Christmas and I couldn't believe how stoked everyone was for the olympics. Town after town had huge turnouts for the torch in the *ahem* the most inclement weather. Minus 20 at 6am in Meaford when the torch was only scheduled to be there for 60 seconds and about 500 people showed up.

You hear about the games occasionally down here. There have been a few newspaper articles about vancouver and there are a few US Olympic team/sponsor ads on tv. But aside from that, not much. I enjoy telling people about all the stupid shit that Vanoc is pulling.
