I'm no expert, but I've looked around at Linux options in frustration with Applesoft. Ones like Ubuntu and Mint are 95% there for everyday use, but my god, that 5% makes you want to stab your eyes out.

did you get your system sorted out yet?

i ended up going with a 240 gig ssd and using my underutilized external hd as extra storage. the swap and cloning went flawlessly.

now it like 10 seconds from the time i hit the power button until i'm typing in my password.

^^^^^ no dude, i did not. Formatting, cloning, extra cables, ssd drives, original hard drives....fu$& me. At least 15 tries, google, youtube, every thing at my disposal and still a fail.It may be a perfect storm of product compatibility and the health of the old HD.
Gonna go by a nes OS and just go that route.$$$$$$ This sht has consumed me for the last 5 days. I have missed a ride or two and day at the boxing gym. My tenacity gets the best of me some times. But in the wrong direction to focus. i would have gladly paid 200 $ to avoid all of this.

End rant. WBP here i come.

Like any one gives a shit. But, i ended up finding out that the new ssd drive is not compatible with my older (3) laptop. So, i bought a new one. I am going to format the ssd drive for the new machine, install it. Take the new drive and put it in the old laptop. i end up with two laptops. which i dont need, but differs some of the loss. I will leave the old one on my tv.

Mirror the new laptop's drive to the SSD. That's what I did and it was probably the quickest way to do the swap. But you will need to be able to hook up the SSD as an external drive.

Is there a difference between mirror and clone? I was going to clone the SSD drive, then install it. Or try.

So, i have been with windows 8 for a bit now. Two different brands and machines. (toshiba and acer). Is W8 garbage?
Slow and constant mouse freezing and stalling. Fully updated all drivers and Windows updates. Acer support cant fix it. They keep saying to refresh the thing. There is lots of bitching on line about it, but is there any real fixes for all brands?
I will buy my first Mac if not. No windows 7 and W8 seems almost basically unusable with the mouse freezing. It took me 7minutes to complete this post with the mouse/keyboard freezing.

Often the touchpad driver is incorrect, and if you can try the one from the touchpad manufacturer instead of the laptop manufacturer it will work much better.

Go into Control Panel->Devices and find out what type of touch pad you have (likely either Alps or Synaptics). When you find out which one, get the latest from their website.

Another thing to do is launch task manager to view CPU usage and then see if their are any CPU spikes when your cursor freezes.
