Well I hope you never handle firearms with that attitude. Guns can be extremely dangerous, and should be treated with a lot of respect for the damage that they can do. People die every day from firearms.

Statistically speaking, shootings generally incur more casualties then fatalities. A famous example of this is the north hollywood shootout, where the bank robbers shot 17 people with ar15's and ak47's. None of them died. The only fatalities where the bank robbers.

Here is a wiki link on the incidient (too lazy to find an actual article): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Hollywood_shootout

Even though the chance of dying from a bullet is low in most shootouts, I never wan't to be shot. Here are some pictures of a person who was shot in the leg by a 5.56x45mm round. For those of you who do not know, the 5.56mm is the ammunition used in m16's (among many other popular firearms), this round is considered to small to hunt with in Canada, but can still do considerable damage.

The problem w/ the 5.56 is that it has a lot of velocity behind it and yet a very light
projectile so it starts to turn over over a fairly close distance which gives you such
a bad entry and exit wound.

That is the biggest benefit of 5.56mm over 7.62. The 5.56mm was designed to spin and tumble in flight before penetrating the target. It's primary purpose is to wound instead of kill. Where as a 7.62mm does the opposite. Where the adage- Goes in like a dime comes out like a dinner plate is how best to describe it.

Militarily at least in conventional warfare- army facing army the 5.56mm is the round of choice. The biggest being for every wounded soldier you take 3-4 others out of the immediate fight. They are busy aiding and extracting the wounded soldier. The other benefit is more ammo can be carried.

The Russians 5.45x39 round is suppose to be an excellent wounder as well. It has an "air pocket/bubble" in the tip of the bullet to induce tumbling on impact. It also supposedly has greater penetration capabilities then the 5.56. The Afghani's called the 5.45 the "poison bullet".
