"lies, damned lies and statistics" Mark Twain.
Hard to say what the real numbers are but I'm sure more than 10% of riders get injured over the course of a season. Seriously, how many here can say they never get injured? Doesn't have to be a big one, sprains, stitches etc... I honestly can't remember a season without one; my friends included.(so far this year I have none)

Awesome work!

Mountain biking is dangerous. Rocks are harder than snow.

Total rocket science!

I thing winter and summer crowds are very different, more leisurely skiers. Most DH Mountain bikers are full on and more aggressive in general. Not many fur wearing tourists.

I think pro riders can afford to not wear armour because they get paid to take the risk and while a lengthy rehab period keeps them out of the action, they don't lose their day job. I wear armour and full face because I can't afford to be unable to show up for work on Mondays. I'm there to have fun, get a few thrills, but I always rejoice when, at the end of the day, I can walk away under my own power.
I ski and snowboard, and certainly avalanche risk comes into play if you push the limits in those sports.
The volumes are different. There are way more casual skiers on the hill in the winter than there are riders in the summer.

That crash video was crazy. That was a perfect example of people pushing their limits way to far.

I remember long ago on crabapple someone had a huge crash right infront of me. Landed on his head. I heard later that he had died. Was pretty upsetting to hear....

What a piece of shit article. It failed to mention the MOST important factor in that report, was that 95% of the injured were wearing nothing more than a helmet. Safety equipment DOES work. It is the difference between walking away from a crash, and being hauled out by patrol. What kind of journalism school hack wrote this garbage?

Finally, chicks just don't get us dudes as is evidenced by this comment.

“That’s probably because women take fewer risks but they also take lessons before they go out there. Males, on the other hand, go out there with bravado and when they end up at the clinic, they even want to take pictures of their gory injuries, so they can share them on Facebook,” she said.
Yes, yes we do.

These sensationalised articles are total crap. I wonder what would happen if they ran a news story on the health risks and morbidity rates of a low exercise lifestyle with a high sugar diet? It would make DH look fairly safe at that point, I'm sure.
