I would think Railway and Miners are/were pretty similar. Its not like truckers dont smoke either. Either way, I'm sure it would be hard to get accurate stats for something like that. If it does cause cancer....I think i'm screwed.

Cancer is becoming more prominent because everything else that used to kill people is being cured. The population is aging. But I agree there are environmental factors too. Pesticides for example. I drink a lot of coffee and it's usually not organic. Coffee beans are one of the most heavily sprayed crops in the world. I shutter to think what the 20-25 cups of sludge I swill a day is doing to me.

What about that we're living much longer than ever before in history (unless you think the
bible is a real storybook), and as we get older our DNA dies off and changes (I'm paraphrasing
as I'm not a doctor). So, just us living longer will increase our cancer rates by a large
factor. Smoking didn't cause cancer in the NA indians because they didn't live long enough
to get it.

And from all the stuff I read every week on "This week in Science", we're getting closer
every year to fixing that damage. We live in a wondrous age, where real miracles are
happening every day. I remember as a kid seeing people that had polio, quite a few actually,
I can't remember the last time I saw someone afflicted from that disease.

The economy might suck, but our quality of life has never,and I mean EVER been better.
