regular Gatorskins vs hardshell version
Anyone had both the Continental Gatorskin and the Gator Hardshell? And can offer up some comparisons/reviews? I am looking for the 25c for commuting and rec rides. awesomeness

Hardshells are overkill, IMHO. Regular Gatorskins and 4-Seasons offer the nicest balance of grip, ride feel, and puncture protection out there, and they served me well through 5 years of couriering. A Hardshell level of puncture protection really only serves casual/lazy riders who aren't vigilant about scanning for road debris and keeping their tires properly inflated. I haven't brought the Hardshells into Mighty in a long time, and have yet to encounter a client with a negative Gatorskin experience. If flat protection is that much of a concern, go with the nuclear option and run Schwalbe Marathons!

I have no experience with Maxxis road tires. Given the relatively small contact patch that road bikes have, I like to maximize available traction via stickier, natural rubber compounds from European manufacturers instead of longer-lasting, but harder, synthetic rubber from Asian brands.

I am currently on Duranos, 28c. I will be switching over to 25c soon as they are currently a little to close to my fenders for my liking. I have no big complaints against the Duranos, just researching other options at this point.

On 23mm tires, I found gatorskins to be really heavy... Where a regular kevlar bead tire is around 230g the gatorskins are 340-350g each. It's noticeable on a 1550g wheel set. I would only go for gatorskins if you have a really consistent flat problem and/or are riding out to areas where you would be stuck walking 10-15km if you get a flat.

I wouldn't put Gatorskins on a 1550g wheelset, but I also wouldn't put a 1550g wheelset on a commuter bike, either.

that is true, gatorskins + 1900g 700c wheelset = even heavier... a 32/32 wheelset is already heavy enough. I guess it depends on how many km you're averaging on regular tires between flats.

I saw a guy commuting southbound on Burrard on a Cervelo SLC. With deep cross section carbon wheelset. With a backpack.
