Cyclist Hit by Car on Dollarton Tonight

Healing vibes to the cyclist I saw on Dollarton tonight. As I left the office (on bike) at 5:30 I saw a fire truck at Dollarton & Forrester...I rolled up thinking that a fire alarm had gone off at the cafe on the corner or there was a fender bender.

As I pedaled around the corner, I saw the immediate confusion & aftermath of a cyclist who had been hit by a car. Buddy was down on the sidewalk, under a blanket with firefighters supporting his neck, placing an oxygen mask on him. Helmet was beside him, as was his bike. It was fucking surreal and scary at the same time. Then I saw his bike...the rear wheel was toast, but everything else looked to be in good condition. Then I rode by the car that had hit him. At first I looked at the bumper and saw little damage and was puzzled. Then I looked up. The windshield was completely smashed (the shape of the damage was a perfect body sized dent). The top of the hood and adjoining roof were also completely fuxored.

As I pedaled back, the ambulance and police were just arriving on scene and buddy was getting prepped for a stretcher. I rode by again and saw that the bike still had a blinky light flashing on the seatpost. Again, surreal and scary.

Play it safe out there ladies and gentlemen. As the days get shorter and the light becomes less and less with each day, ensure you are commuting safe, with bright lights and being hyper-aware of the cars around you.

Starts off bike to work week on a crappy note...

Was the cyclist riding eastbound or westbound side? Or was he on the "bike path"?. That's my commute route - could be someone I know.

Man... Hate to see posts like this... I have had enough near misses to scare me out of road riding anywhere near dusk... I ride for the fun of riding when i pull out my roadie, and sitting there riding wondering the whole time if someone is gonna plaster me on the front of their car just leaches the fun right out of it...

Ride safe everyone! And my thoughts and prayers with the injured biker....

The biker was lying at the bus stop in front of the cafe on the eastbound side. I suspect he was on the road pedaling eastbound.

Hey guys I'm the biker who got hit. Thanks for your kind words and thoughts. It's true, a bit stiff but otherwise all systems are fully functional. Back to work today. Shopping for a new bike on the weekend. Kudos to the NV emergency crews. It was a little scary there for a while. Cheers!

Rear ended. The only reason I know anything about the vehicle is from a picture the cop showed me after. The only thing I remember is a huge bang, thinking "what the fuck was that?", then being on the ground making sure I could move everything.

Glad to hear you're ok. Is there anything you can teach us as far as avoiding a similar type accident? Or was it just unavoidable and bad luck? Also, how does someone just hit you from behind?? The driver must be an idiot.

Do you think you would be more likely now to use the protected bike lane/path from now on? It starts just before Forester and ends @ Mountain Hwy..

I avoid the Dollarton bike path. Why? Among them blind street intersections, blind parking lot exit crossings, mega-puddles when it rains, pedestrians all over the path, metal poles/barriers at random locations and the cracked, lumpy pavement. Its OK if you are taking a scenic, meandering tour that snakes past light industry in the Dollarton area, but not if you are trying to cycle to/from work as efficiently as possible.

There is no protected bike lane between Amherst/Old Dollarton and Mtn Hwy. One option is to ride the sidewalk (or ride the on-ramp to the Trans-Canada Hwy) until cross Trans-Canada Hwy on-ramp and then cross the Trans-Canada Hwy off-ramp to get to Mtn Hwy. The other option is to cross Dollarton to the South Side but you have to cross the Trans Canada off ramp on the E side of the Ironworker's Memoral, go under the Hwy Bridge and then cross Dollarton again on the west side of the Ironworker's Memoral. Either way, you are dodging traffic a few times.

I give Forester a miss westbound by taking Old Dollarton just after the Korean School. It also gives you a traffic light and safer lane-changing options onto the 2nd Narrows Bridge or Main Street.

Customer of mine got hit a few days ago as well. Folded his Dr. Dew in half a bit. He's ok, but a little nasty nonetheless.
