I could report the person that sent the email but there's not really anything any evidence is there? Is there such a thing as an email address that I could forward this too? A quick search suggests not.

wow, can't believe there was so much debate bitd about whether bike rescue was legit. such an obivous front/sham

as for bikes going to africa... whether purchased or donated, most of them end up being sold. so if that's your plan, makes just as much sense to buy them in bulk from thieves, esp. if they come to you, as it does spending your time and effort faking your cause and promoting and holding a bike drive

Yea - it may seem that way to someone now with the benefit of hindsight. But when your bike is stolen you will look anywhere and everywhere to get it back. I actually got my bike back in 3 days through that sham - for a$50 donation after the fact. He woulda let me have it back for free but puppy-eyed me into making the donation. THe fact that he was able to make a couple calls and locate my bike within a coupe hours of me first contacting him shoulda been a warning sign for sure -- but i wanted my bike back. Call me a sucker but it worked for me....i was one of his defenders in the beginning because i thought the model would work....I did visit his shop a year later and began to have suspicions.. HE had $1000s of bike and parts in his shop - and piles of laptops also which im sure he was fencing too. He said he was in for over $50000.00 at the time and needed to recover his losses. Guy was a good spinster thats for sure. HE had even hired a wrench to help out with all the bike re-arranging he was doing to make bikes seems un-identifiable. He was a true fraudster.

No one needed hindsight on that con. You just were choosing to ignore the obvious and then rationalize it. Glad it worked for you, but it didn't make it any less of an obvious con job.

wtf is the point of this? I was choosing to ignore the obvious? try thinking outside of the box once in a while - if someone who's history you aren't aware of puts together a bike rescue program that gets you your bike back in 3 days and has a documented history of returning over 100 bikes to their proper owners i think that there may be some justification to believing that it might be legit .. and at that point in time there were no formal complaints against him that I was aware of. If i could somehow develop the connections that would get me into that world of bike fencing i would even consider running a program like this (in the ideal world where i had time and resources to do it) I still think that this kind of program could work - nothing wrong with thinking progressively. I have already admitted that I was wrong when it came to BLackwell - but i still defend my position and think that bike rescue, if paired properly with authorities or an organization like NSMBA - could work.
The cops do the same thing on a much larger scale - its call the annual bike auction. As far as i know they don't even try to clear the bikes before they flip them. MInd you 90% of those bikes are junk....

Bah.

The obvious was that he was/is a fence and was trying to figure out a way to launder the merch. All that other noise is just rationalization.

Nice... Maybe do a bit of research before you throw out conjecture that could potentially damage a great program? You never know who is reading these forums.

Most of the bikes collected and repaired for Bikes for Tykes remain in the community either through Family Services or the Salvation Army.

Do some of those bikes end up on Craigslist? Sure! It's like questioning the value of Welfare or EI because a few people cheat.

Please do. It's brutal to see bikes getting chopped and sold like that.

Can we find some hackers to make his life hell? Out him on 4chan or Reddit as a known bike thief and have social media bring down the karma hammer?

Was being sarcastic ... I did some searches online to see whether there were any reports of bikes for charity or anything of that sort being resold. Nothing. Zero. Nada. Just a bunch of stories, reports and an audit statement, none of them negative. Was asking for a link or evidence regarding Boomforreal's claim. No response. Anyway, its always good to research charities and non-profits. If you decide good/bad based on one or two or three postings on the Internet, you are not doing yourself any favours.
