Nanaimo....yes, Nanaimo...

Birthday ride back home in Nanaimo. A short showcase of some of the classic XC lines on Abyss/Humility, and a very little bit of Poomont;-) It's hard to believe the powder conditions. I won't have to retire Nic and Ralf for a few weeks yet, I hope!

Nice, happy birthday.
I've only ridden Dumont once and we were shown a few trails by the OBB boys. Wanna tour me around next time I'm there?

Absolutely, if anybody is interested in checking it out message me. It is quite often passed over for Cumberland and Victoria, but the riding is very decent. The guide book is good, but the loop options they give are lacking. If you are doing a couple days I can steer you towards a shop owner in Duncan who is a great guide for that area as well. I'm in the Vancouver area now, but I do have a home base in Nanaimo so I'm over there quite a lot.

Love that video...really made me want to get out and ride. Must have taken forever, I have done a few self shot videos and respect the amount of work that they take...thanks for all the hard work!

Thanks for that! It wasn't too bad actually, pretty well 4 hours for a 2 hr loop (X2). It was my first attempt at it and the hardest part was propping up that damn iphone. Turns out they make a really cool tripod that has bendy legs that can wrap around branches! Also I wasn't sure how much climbing to add. I really wanted to at least have a vid of some of the Humility crux moves as they have started to log that area, and they will be gone soon. 1994 was the first year I rode Abyss, and even at that time it was very old MTB trail. So little has changed to the trails themselves (sans logging). Nam is one of my favorite places to re-kindle the old school stoke! BUT, our handlebars have evolved over the years (wider), but Nanaimo's trees haven't!

The Abyss is dope! Plenty of rock with Arbutus trees giving the trail an exotic feel. Take your bike without your car on the ferry for an innexpensive unique experience! Sorry if I made spelling mistakes. No spellcheck on my smartphone.

Good video! You captured the essence of these trails quite well. I happen to live and garden in this area and would be happy to tour folks around as well.

The network is fairly extensive (40+km of singletrack) and has some interesting features including this creation:

Have rode through Abyss trail a few time now and always have a blast. Heading over to the cabin (Gabriola) this weekend and will take the bike along and hopefully get over for a ride.

Don't recall much for wood work on Abyss/Extension or is that Doumont?

Haha ... I used to ride there with the crew from the waste treatment plant every once in a while. I remember when they started laying down sludge from the sewage plant as fertilizer ... phew!!

Nicely done! I used to ride up there 2-3 times per week when I was in Nanaimo. Brings back good memories!

Terrific Video.
I'm heading over in a couple of days and was going to bring my road bike. Bah to that. Now I'm stoked to ride knowing those trails are there.

Poomont!

They spray on the east side of the road typically, but when you go high to like upper Armageddon, I seem/smells like some of the west side areas at the top get it. The east side was fun back in the day before the poo. Spraying for about 10 years now?
