Can I still ski with a busted hip?
So, I'm recovering from a fractured acetabulum and I'll be able to walk again near the end of November. The doctor of course has given me quite a lengthy list of what I can no longer do. I know that a lot of that is liability ass coverage and in some cases I can probably bend the rules a little. What I'm wondering is if skiing is still in the picture? Are there any of you out ther with broken/replaced hips still using 2 planks? I'm worried about the twisting motion if I bail as my hip is now the weak point, the socket isn't quite the shape it used to be to the point that I can feel it rattle around a bit, as well my leg no longer has quite the same range of motion it used to (ie: I can no longer sit cross leg'd on the floor). I don't think boarding would be a problem, but I'd really like to still ski. Any advice from other broken people Would be appreciated!

The advice from one friend that shattered his hip while ski racing is to never ski. The advice from another friend that damn near lost her leg while ski racing is to ski as much as you can.
Listen to your doctor as your injury is unique, as are your limitations. |

Yeah right, this is great place to ask for medical advice, lots of knowledge and experience here with your specific injury.
![]() Get a second and third medical opinion from doctors, sports med doctors and orthopedic surgeons. They will give you the goods on the risks involved with what you have and what you want to do. That being said, you can do whatever you want to do, it may cripple you, it may not be a problem, or it may cause you discomfort. It is your choice, just make it an educated one. ask your doc about ski touring or xc sking. got a friend into ski touring after hip replacement. after he pedaled on the road for a few weeks we did prob 3 months of quick access touring on mellow slopes(no falls). the rest of the yr we were getting some long days on some really good lines. in the early days he had alot of pain walking to the grocery store 3 blocks away but he could walk/ski on snow for hours. the end of the yr he was stronger than ever. good luck
