How can you compare service between an LBS and CRC? Will CRC get your wheel fixed up while you wait so you can hit the trails? Similarly, is it fair to expect an LBS to sell all Shimano at 54% off to every yokel with a credit card? Of course not.

I think somebody is confusing low prices with service. I'm fine with paying more to get something right now, and when I can wait I'll order from CRC.

Usually I wind up paying the same as retail when I order online because of duty and shipping etc.

The best way to go is to get the inside track at your favorite lbs. Pay full pop for a bike then show some loyalty when buying tires, drive trains etc. A good bike shop will start cutting you a price. Ends up working out for them and you.

I think he's talking about his experience with Cove's lack of service in particular, and not all the local bikes shops. In other words, if you're going to buy a wheel and not get any service, why not buy from the cheapest source?

Also, I <heart> my LBS.

To those looking for a good shop, check out the "shop props" thread and it will guide you in the right direction.

That really depends on what you want out of a shop. If you want to be tied to one shop (which I know that you do), then it's fine. A lot of us do all our own mech work, and if we need a part in a hurry, are willing to pay full price, so at that point, what incentive is the bike shop going to give me to keep going there instead of mail ordering.

Until the bike industry can pull it's head out of it's arse and not charge 500% more because it's offered in 5 different colours of anodising, and other such ridiculous things, then I will keep hunting down the best value for money I can get.

You're absolutely right, Steve. The industry is pretty messed up but I dont blame the LBS's for that.

That being said, it would be nice if it were easier to try different bikes. I guess you could say I'm in a monogomous relationship with the Cove, but that doesn't mean I don't ogle other bikes.

Holy eff don't get me started on this. We live in a mecca of sorts for riding and yet almost every shop has countless 4k and up wonder bikes claiming to do it all with zero drawbacks lining the showroom floors yet a parking lot test is often all that is offered.

Its like going to demo a snowboard at Whistler, yeah its free, but we don't demo any of the boards you are interested in, but you can buy that board for full pop from us right now

As with anything else, I find different LBSes have different strengths. I tend to spread the love around. Some LBSes have good pricing, some have knowledgeable staff, some have large selection, some have a good repair shop and mechanics, some have a $10 and under bin etc.

I have to say that Cove is the best shop that I deal with (aside from road bikes that is Peninsula Cycles in White Rock) and I get excellent service when I am in there.

I never have gotten a bad vibe from Chaz or Sasha, they have only ever been positive and welcoming when I am in the store. Even if I just end up BSìng with them.

I make a point of stopping in there each time I am in North Vancouver.

Is Cove the shop at the bottom of Fromme on the main highway where they were doing some
major street work in front of it a few months back? If so those guys were great. Had one
guy from Hawaii worked there was totally cool. Treated me like Oahana.

I have know Sasha since he worked at BSP and he is who sold me Cove Hand Job. Chaz dose not know me at all and he has given me a ride to the top of Seymore when he was not even riding and He gave me a killer deal back in the day on some 07 Rock Shox Revelation. Jamie ( I think that was the name) just gave my BFF and his wife a killer deal and great service on a Kona Caldera and Lana'i. Some of the shop rats that hang around Cove had tude but the main guys are super chill.

I did how ever love ripping on them about their out dated site, circa 2008. lol

When you take in your bike for service and it comes back no better than when t went in, then an online store is equal.

Shops need to keep the good mechanics; unfortunately most don't see it that way.

Cove saved my butt when I needed an older Devicni pivot axle last minute.

Zero attitude. Good guys.
