I'll be back to a 2.4 Purgatory front and 2.2 rear on my 29er this winter.

I have been running Eskar 2.3s front (32psi) and back (30psi) since March. 10-15hrs of riding per week. They have been great. Didnt get caked up to much in the wet/mud. Good grip in the rain on dirt and granite. In the dry they have done well with no issues. Not the fastest tire but I will be putting a new set on the bike in the next few weeks.

2.2 Telonix for the back. Probably 2.2 Black Chlli Trail King for the front.
It gets pretty slick in the Fraser Valley. Telonix looks like it will really dig in. Couldln't resist the 4th of July special at Blue Sky. It was $20! |

Tell me what you think about the Trail King. I had mine on the front for quite a while and enjoyed it, it has pretty good rain traction, but one thing I don't like about it is the tread pattern on the edge--it doesn't really rail when leaned over and the carcass of the tire (because it's so fat on my flows) seems to contact and slip on wet roots because of the weird side treads. I'm trying it on the back now to see how it goes. Huge volume in that tire for a 2.2 tho.

I'm about to run HR2 EXOs in the hard compound.

Great tires, but they priced themselves off my bike this year. Unless you can find them on sale...they are just too expensive.

the Purgatory Control is an excellent and highly durable in my experience. i push my Shinobi pretty hard with the 2.4 on the front and it does all i ask of it. i just put a 2.35 Nobbi Nic on the back with snakeskin and it has incredible grip. these may not be the equivalent to some ultra sticky compounds as found on pure DH type tires, but i find them highly grippy, even in the wet. personally, i would like to see the Spec Clutch SX in 29er. yes it would be beastly heavy, but it might have a market for foul weather riders who want to run low pressure and want the ultimate in winter grip on hard terrain. i have these tires on my 26 7" bike and wow, does a thick soft tire tame the rocks or what! super confidence inspiring.

So from real world experiences, is the Butcher or Clutch better for slick rocks, roots and soft conditions? Control or SX casing

Any recommendations for my Fromme bike (Norco Range) for the fall? Might want to try some specialized tires since they are a bit cheaper than Maxxis!

you have to realize how different the SX models are from Spesh. they are very heavy, almost a downhill casing, so if you put lightweight and speed or keeping up with a fast group at the top of the list, you may not like the SX tires. i imagine they are in that category of ply and a half of Maxxis (but i speculate, i've never owned the Maxxis tires). go to a bike shop and handle a Butcher or Clutch SX vs a control tire, and you'll see what i mean.

Fall , winter north shore tire choice?
played out , unoriginal , and some would state "too easy of a choice". Mobster front , high roller rear. a little bit of weight , but the rear high roller keeps the speed up on the climbs , flats. the mobster front keeps a predictable , wide , and pretty stable front end on the slicker downhills. its been around for years , but for me . Predictable, Stable , and no more weight penalty than i am willing to deal with while staying up right , and intact. BEST COMBO OF TIRES SINCE I RAN A MISSLE FRONT , WITH A EL GATO REAR! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() :s cream:![]()

Front I'm still thinking about...probably going to get a hans dampf and be done with it but in the mean time maybe I'll give the trail king another go up front. I don't like the "feel" of it compared to the nobby nic tho. It seems to bounce around more and not really provide me with as much of a feel of the trail as the nobby nic. Maybe it's too cushioned or something for my taste? Maybe it's just a matter of experimenting with pressure more. Another idea is trying to get a hold of the elusive nobby nic 2.4 in trailstar compound. Sounds like the perfect fall/winter/spring front tire for me as I love the 2.25 nobby nic on the front in the summer.

for me it is the Hans Dampf (29 x 2.35). IMO, these tires have been surprisingly good in just about everything.
I will get one of the elusive nobby nics for the rear when i can. |
