That's my first suggestion if the budget allows it. Great mileage and the reviews for the 4x4 system are very good.

My 2000 Xterra just failed Air Care. Want to buy it?

The vehicle has been great. It's not bad off road. As others have said the gas mileage is not the greatest. Good thing I ride to work most days.

So far the vehicles I am looking at (in no real order) are:

Honda Element
Nissan Pathfinder
Nissan Xterra - non turbo
Toyota 4Runner

What do you all think would be my best bet?
My mother-in-law is looking to unload her Xterra for $7500 or there abouts. I thinks it's a 2004.

Lots of imports that I've had or been in rattle. Just depends on the vehicle's use over those years.

So sounds like not getting an Xterra is the answer in this thread.

I agree with k...my Canyon has 295,000kms of abuse on it (just asked some of my scared passengers how I drive on logging roads) and it has no interior rattles whereas my mrs.aeropusher's RAV4 has 60,000km's, never goes off road and the squeaking of the dash would drive anyone insane.

If you want to know about older (2005-2007) Canyons PM me....I've definitely torture tested mine.

I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee, great vehicle but not a ton of storage room

with the 4 liter straight 6 engine and manual transmission I get 9.5l/100km or approx 29mpg on the highway driving 120km/hr pretty steady - when shopping around there were not many SUV's that had as much power or as good of fuel efficiency out there.

I bought mine with 165k in mint condition for $4500, IMO it was a better buy than an aging 4Runner with twice as many kilometers and a much higher price tag.

Not really looking for a gas miser, I just want something decent for its class.

Elements are very versatile and pretty good on gas. But they are based on a Civic platform, have low ground clearance, and have a pretty crappy AWD system, not 4x4. Fine for city use and gravel roads and good in snow... but not an offroad/logging road vehicle.

Available with a 5sp manual though.
