160mm forks, what's good?
I'm after some new forks for my Bullit as I want to get rid of the old Boxxers and go for something single crown for riding DH/FR on. I briefly had a set of Domains that felt quite nice and smooth but a bit dead and didn't have amazing small bump sensitivity. I would like air if possible as it's easier to tune to my weight which at 75kg seems to sit right between Rock Shox Medium and Soft springs! Probably why I didn't like the Domain, was a bit too hard for me with the medium but soft would've been really divey I think. Looks like I have a few options:
- Lyrik air (not sure what model to look for, there are so many) - X-Fusion Vengeance HLR DLA - Float 36 160mm Any others that are worth a look? I will probably be buying 2nd hand and have a budget of up to around £350.. oh and if they come in white or grey then that's a bonus as that would look awesome on my polished silver frame ![]() Alternatively I could go for something coil but worried about sitting in between the 2 weights again. Anyone around my weight riding coil Lyriks and what spring are you finding best? Last edited by TTB; 08-24-2012 at 07:56 PM. |

Seriously look at a Marzocchi 55 RC3Ti. They are pretty remarkable forks, and they are gun metal grey!

If you have a 'new' Bullit, there are some really cheap 1.5" Lyriks at Jenson right now. Stick with solo air if possible.

No it's old so I have to have 1,1/8" which makes it harder. Any thoughts on 2009 Marz 55 RC3s? http://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/1127031/
Could probably get that down to about £200 collected.. |

I believe the RC3's were good. Don't touch any other Marz. 55's from '09 though...

Look for an old Rock Shox Totem Solo Air. They seem to have gone out of style so you could probably get one cheap and they felt good if you set them up right.

I have a 2012 36 Float RLC. Its been pretty good so far. If you take care of it, it bombs pretty good.

Can't find any Lyrik or Totem solo airs for sale at the minute. There's a few Lyrik coils (u-turn and standard) for sale and tbh I'm thinking about just going for one of those again despite my fears of being inbetween coil weights. It may be a terrible mistake. To what extent can the coil weight be tuned - ie if I bought a soft spring could I make it less likely to bottom out and dive under braking whilst still having the correct amount of sag and not feeling too soft? I have no idea about tuning a fork, none of mine have any adjustments other than rebound. All I know is the medium one in my domain didn't bottom out, but was not quite enough sag and felt a bit dead like it was set too hard.

Forks need regular service bro. If you can't do it yourself, buy only what the local shop can warranty/fix! Otherwise you're in a world of crappy forx and HUGE waits.

Has anyone tried the Totem Solo Air fork and if so long term how are they? The NSMB review from 2007 is very positive and this is the fork I'd be buying as I've found one for cheap 2nd hand! However I'd need to lower it to 160mm internally as the 565mm A2C will be too much for my Bullit, raising the front end and BB even higher! Can this be done reliably without it being a complete bodge job?
