Crankworxs DH photos
Spent Sunday taking in the DH race @ Crankworx. Such a great atmosphere on the course and a great result for the local kid. After attempting to snap a few pictures, I have to say I gained a whole new respect for a lot of the photographers on this site (and for sports photographers in general), bloody subjects won't stand still!

What camera and settings do you use for those close up shots like the one of Stevie?

I've got a Canon Rebel XTi with a 17-85 image stabilizing lens and a 50mm macro lens, but not a lot of knowledge to set it up for action sports.

I was using a Nikon D90 and shot everything with a Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR lens which I lucky enough to get my hands on for the weekend.

Because you can get so close to the action most of the shots were at 70mm. Basically I just tried to keep the shutter speed high (around 1/1000). In the woods I was at 1600 ISO and the lens was wide open at F2.8 to keep the speed up. Some of the jump shots out in the sun were at 200 ISO and F4, and the pan (4th from the top) was shot at F13 and 1/125.

In hindsight I would have liked to have had something with a wider angle in the woods, even my 50mm 1.8 would have been more effective.

Here's the EXIF on the shot of Stevie:

Camera - Nikon D90
Exposure - 0.001 sec (1/1250)
Aperture - f/2.8
Focal Length - 70 mm
ISO Speed - 400
Exposure Bias - -1/3 EV
Flash - No Flash
