Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. Just the info I was looking for, thank you very much!

I was thinking clockwise for exactly the same reasons as you, but in retrospect, would it have worked better counter-clockwise? (Steeps and exposed side hills don't normally phase me!)

Also, what are the bugs like at the moment?

Upper Grasslands from Cowboy camp to Spruce Lake hasn't been cleared of blowdown this year, some are large trees that will need a big chain saw or lots of time with a small saw.

Brett Creek down from the Shulaps Traverse has lots of blowdown, allow extra time. (Make sure you have a good map (does one even exist?), GPS track or instructions, finding the CH horse camp & trail down was challenging...)

Ya, was planning to go up Mid Grasslands to get to the Potato Patch but took the wrong trail out of the Cowboy camp. Oh well, made it a 4 lake tour instead of the usual 3. The decent to Spruce was fun.

Craig / Joe

Will be up a Tyax this weekend. Getting dropped at Warner. Did this trip about 5yrs ago, so it is no longer clear.

Heading to MEC tonight to see if any other maps are available. Want to ensure our group is able to get the most out of the trip.

Do either of you have GPS tracks of these trails? What routes would you suggest that are 10hr climbing marathons?

thx
J

Joe: are these the directions from Cowboy Camp to Spruce Lake you'd recommend?

I'll be climbing to Spruce from Jewel Bridge...based on the insert to Craig's map, there are a couple of options:
(1) once across Gun Creek, go steep NE then turn NW for the most direct route up to bottom of Windy Pass trail or
(2) keep nearer to Gun Creek then head NE to the trail intersection or
(3) go up to Cowboy Camp and then cut back East.

Which way is the generally recommended route as a climb?
Which way is the generally recommended route as a descent?

Thanks

Joe - can you pick me up a coffee? Maybe squeeze my hand? What way is the best way to go on the high way or byway?

Thanks

No, those are some directions to exit from the Shulaps Traverse down Brett Creek.

Edit: Nevermind, the directions below are assuming you are coming from Warner/Trigger/Hummingbird. I mis-read your post.
If you have the map below, from the Cowboy Camp, take the Mid Grasslands trail to Potato Patch (climbing) then Meadows trail (decending) to just before the first bridge across the creek. If you look at the map it will make sense. (On our trip over the long weekend I took the Upper Grassland trail by accident. By the time we realized the mistake we had already done most of the climbing we decided to go all the way to Spruce as a few of the group hadn't been that way before.)

BTW Wernie, the lounge/bar at Tyax makes decent Americanos & Lates (according to my wife).

I haven't downloaded my GPS since I got home but someone else has the track here (we dropped a vehicle and cooler of beer at the end of the road the night before so we didn't have to do the gravel road climb back to Tyaughton Lake):

You want the 2nd edition of the Chilcotin map.

Thanks, I picked up the map yesterday at MEC. Looks to have great detail. Still want to get some track info for the GPS if possible.

It looks like we will be heading from Warner to Trigger, to Hummingbird then somewhat along Gun Creek, but from there I am not 100% certain. It looks like one option to continue down and towards Eldorado Cr or possibly climb up to Spruce and Windy Pass

Can anyone comment on how much of a climb up to Spruce and or Windy Pass and suggestions on routes.

thx
J
