the end of last season or the beginiing of next season?
was the burning question and burn we did
From hy 16 in northern BC take the road south to Kemess mine, lookout for bulk carriers it sure would be nice to have a radio the 1st truck to see you will call out to the rest so they know where you are there but you don't know they are coming so just GTF off to the shoulder when you see them, its < 300kms round trip back to Houston so fuel isn't a problem unless you run diesel and you get back after 5pm cuz there is only cardlock diesel after 5 pm just before the mine head up at the emerald glacier road (4x4) and you can drive 4km to 1700M where we parked/camped at a mirco wave repeater, there is also a mining exploration camp and buddy was working on the road punching thru to 1900 meters with a hoe, he was digging thru 20ft of snow at the top, the owner is real cool just don't leave garbage and don't drive off road Pretty good skiing in july I would call it suncups with a top layer of slush but no rot so I could walk on it without punching thru and you still had lots of speed, good turns from as high as 2145M down to 1445M so a 700 meter run was possible, we got 3 runs on wednesday and 1 run with a hike on thursday for about 5000-6000ft before the weather went for a dump this ^^^^^ is the view up from 1445M I had never skied in summer before and was suprised by the heat cuz it was blue bird and way HOT at close to 30 degrees, I could see heat waves coming off the snow but the snow was still good A hat, longsleeves, sunscreen, bug dope, sunglasses with glacier sheilds are a must for the bugs and UV protection and we needed to drink 3 or 4 liters of water, the plan is to possibly go back in a month if the weather is nice ... there should still be lots of snow and my feet decided it was the beginning of ski season |

Awesome.
I haven't done any summer skiing this year but I really do enjoy it. I always figured the start of the next season was when new snow has fallen after none for a couple months. Generally September or even late August. |

..I think that it qualifies the start of next season, I like to dream! in a month and change we'll be getting first frosts and in 2 months we'll start seeing a little snow at the tops of the mountains..already stoked for next winter!

We've seen that snow at the top already. Last week, aug 20th or so top of curry and wedge. This year I'm not getting a seasons so it's all tour all the time. 30 grand, that's 5ish laps of all of whis or blackcomb. I'm presently not in shape, I might do 3 laps in a night, we'll see about going to Smithers.

there has also a dusting up on HBM
what will happen is after saturday afternoon sweep the gun goes and you or your team have 24 hrs to do 30,000ft which is 18 laps of a blue run, you skin up a route marked with glow sticks punch yer card at the top and ski down, you can field a team of up to 3 so everyone must do at least 10,000 ft and team members ski one at a time, an easy lap would take 1hr so on a team of 3 you got 2 hrs to recover The Hill gives us the lower lodge which is at the bottom of the run so folks hang out watch skiing & climbing vids on the big screen, eat food, some try to sleep, wait for your turn on the track and eventualy pass out in the wee hrs Dynafit OR and Arcterxy were big sponsors last march and the reps also participated, there was a huge arcterxy presence and they also fielded a team of 3, the level & quality of arcteryx swag was intense my team mate won 700$ worth of nice arcterxy gear, one of the Arcterxy reps won a pair of dynafit AT boots and as an industry insider thru them back in the pot ... huge karma points to the A team its a long way to come for 1 event so I would say come ski HBM, ski hankin, and you MUST check out Shames for anybody who doesn't think they are fast enough it is not a race it is an event all proceeds go to the Rick Hansen foundation but what is the point, why? ... in the words of sir Ed “It’s not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves” Last edited by XXX_er; 08-31-2012 at 01:44 AM. |
