I must be one of the only people without facebook, seems like an easy way to get myself into trouble haha.

My dads friend was one of the original programmers for Windows and now works for the US government developing software which collects a "scary" (his word) amount of personal data every time you use the internet. He says that repeat searches of certain keywords (terrorism, drugs etc) triggers the software to start collecting your data and inputting it into the system.

I always thought this was tin-foil hat conspiracy territory but after talking to him, it turns out it really isn't.

It isn't. It's generally accepted that pretty much ALL internet, landline, and satellite communications in / out of the US are being recorded, plus all kinds of stuff globally. It's just easier to collect it all rather than trying to analyse and flag everything in real time. Once it's all in their databases, the bots start searching for whatever they are looking for.

If you use Facebook, you have no privacy. Ditto for Google, any web browser and the Internet in general. Virtually anyone with the most minimal computer knowledge can do an IP traceroute to your home or business and a Whois to find your Internet service provider. They can google your name, address, phone numbers and contact info as well as and those of your friends and loved ones. They can buy your credit card numbers, your SIN, Social Security numbers etc online.

If you want to keep something private, put it in a safe, throw in a hole underwater and encase it in concrete. And oftentimes that doesn't work either. The antidote is brutal honesty - in your life, your dealings and your day to day actions. Otherwise don't worry about being such weasel-hypocrite unless you can handle the consequences.

All true but that doesn't mean you have to publish every personal detail on facebook like a moron.....
