I never did get to ride the back half of the course, sounds fun. "Punch climbs" - like a big bong hit or a fist to the gut?

Cheers Ben
The back half the course is the hard part. Everybody worries about the big nimby, but it is evil little climbs on the back half that make life miserable. Save some, no, save a lot for the second half of the race.

Yeha I know that climb, it's a grunt in the granny for sure. I guess if you look at it from a racing perspective, walking up is faster than using a granny. If you want to ride the whole course, and are doing more for fun, then a granny is a must.

That's where I catch up and pass lots of riders. I always have a slow start/first half and finish with way to much energy... every race I participate in is the same, just can't seem to manage my races well.

that could also just be your style of training, other activities and your genetic make-up - ratio of fast/slow twitch fibres, etc.

I know nothing about what you're saying. My "training" consist of lots of riding, that's it. I would love to learn about how to train properly but I'm way to distracted...

As someone who coaches a lot of elite level XC racers I can tell you that "ride lots" is one best ways to train.

Learn what your body likes for fuel.

Don't just multiply your regular ride meals to figure what you need, find a mix that keeps you from getting gut rot.

No need to bonk if you're doing it right.

This. Two years, two Nimby's, both times going into them in less than ideal shape...but I saw a lot of guys who past me like I was standing still on big Nimby falling apart on the back nine.

Best advice for average joes: find your comfort zone on the Nimby, and just focus on getting to the top w/ plenty of reserves in the tank. Have a snack on the way up, too.

My mantra will be:

Must remember to pace...Must remember to pace...Must remember to pace...Must remember to pace...Must remember to pace...Must remember to pace...Must remember to pace...

I'll be singing that to myself till the top of Nimby. If there is anything I can remember from my days of XC racing is that I always went too hard too early.

Not if me and my personal sound system have anything to do with it. "Its raining men! Hallejulah! Its raining men, amen!".

If the race organizers are reading this thread, there's a tree down on Overnight Sensation, approx half to 2/3rds of the way down, just past the point where there's an obvious split/braid...at the split, I went left and there's a large tree right across the trail just before a wooden bridge. (I don't know the trail intimately but I think there is only one wooden bridge...)

There's another tree across No Err but it just means you have to wiggle your bars through...

ugh... Bart and I did 4:15 inc stops, and I thought I was going to die.. Riding with a pack is bullshit, not doing that again.

Arthur flew by me up Nimby, Chips, said he thought Arthur had got the date wrong...

That last bit is horrible.

If you forego the pack, how to stay hydrated?
