The fix is to expect the unexpected on any section of trail. If you eat shit on this structure, consider it a learning experience.

This is where I'm coming to with this discussion. This bridge wouldn't be a problem if rider speed and control was also not an issue – and the section in question is definitely not consistent with the user experience of the rest of the trail.

I agree that the bottom part of the trail does not match the rider experience from the rest of the trail, and perhaps there should be changes based on this idea.
I disagree that there should be changes based solely on the bridge itself, as I think most people would or should have slowed enough to get on the bridge.

I state that this thread is way too long and has way too much bitching for this time of year. It is May 1st, not January 1st.....

Especially if its the final 5 feet of the trail. I'd rather time and effort be put into the parts of the trail that matter, like the bermed sections or woodwork enablers that allow longer sections of the trail to be ridden at speed and make bobsled the awesome ride experience it is.

How is the traction on the bridge for climbing? I was thinking of heading up Bobsled sometime soon.

Seriously, dirt-topped bridge. It would take maybe an hour. Grips well, wears well, looks natural.

Whether it 'needs' fixing might be debateable but I doubt anyone would be really bummed to have a little more traction there.

After a year, the Pangor dirt top bridge looks as good as new. But it's not as simple as putting some rails on the existing bridge and dumping dirt on.

- at least 6" high rails
- at least 4" thick slats
- stringers thick enough to handle the load
- filter dirt without rocks
- pack down every 1" of dirt you lay down
- pack at least 6" of dirt

What is that grey stuff used around the new structures on North Road trail, crushed gravel?
Couldn't you just fling some of that on top and let it work its' way into the surface making a natural non-skid?

That's the ashes of the souls of real mountain bike trails.

Thats more or less what I was thinking - lay down the fabric on the existing structure, add 4-6" rails around the edge, and pack in the gold. Insufficient?

And ya, a kid went down pretty hard just as I pedalled past yesterday. I told him to stop bleeding and be thankful for the learning experience.

How about wrapping the whole bridge in chicken wire and nailing down some old knobby tires on top of that? That ought to do it. <\esarc>
