DH Wheels/Rims - your opinions?
I know we've touched on this a bit before - but never directly. I HAVE used the search function and it's brought up a few threads from '09 and such...
So here it is - what are your favourite bomber rims out there, and what are you matching them to for hubs? Having spoken to some cats at my LBSs, seems softer and lighter is in vogue nowadays. Not sure that's my style, I want solid, true and bombproof. Thanks for any intel on this... And for the record, UST is preferred. DS PS - I know Punky's into 440 hubs, and these seem to be pretty solid. I know "Hope" are "not" high end LOL. And I'm not feeling the love to dole out the cabbage for CK or the like. Best wheels for the bang!

Hope pro2 Evo hubs with mavic 823 rims if you want proven and bomb proof. Hope/flows if you want light and decent toughness.
These are both if you're looking to get good bang for the buck. |

X2 for 823's, my bike came with 440 hubs and two years ago I had 823's laced up on them and would do the same again. Barely touched the rims since and never an issue tubeless even running non-ust tires on them.

Mavic 823 on hadleys. I have a set that's been going for 6 years!
Got them prebuilt from Norco, I think. |

Bontager big earl hubs with double tracks. Probably the cheapest bomb proof combo you'll hear today. I've got 7 years on mine with 0 rebuilds.

I would really like Stan's to come out with a 32mm ZTR rim for a lightweight option for DH.

Another vote for 823s on Hopes. You could probably substitute the hubs for DT350s or 240s etc, but the 823s are keepers.

are 823 the same as my old Mavic Deemax rims? i.e. heavy tanks.

I think the DeeMax are indeed the 823s matched to something 'like' the 440 and simply coloured yellow. New version and/or old version, my checking into rims is more or less pointing to this conclusion.
Weight's not too worrisome for me - I'd prefer toughness over uber-featherweights.

Check out the lineup of Spank products. Tons of rim selections with colour options if you're into that.
