Sure. But in good ol' Whistler fashion, they'll take your money now, and offer its implied benefits..................?

Hahaha, that's expected from the IntraWest group. At least the Russians didn't buy them.

I really feel for the guys who buy a pass, then break their collarbone on the third ride of the season.

It's not a BC festival without the skies opening up at least once.

I made a mess of myself in late June and they came through for me. Managed to get back in the park a week before closing and they came through for me at that point as well.

Problem is, dudes come in & start riding hard right off the bat. Best to look at it from a whole season perspective.

If wiser words were ever spoken...

I can't agree with you more. Man, I was one of the luckier guys to be on the DH trails when they first opened on Whistler - they were a bit rough, sparse, gnarly, and the like. But it was really cool - a lot of camaraderie, everyone was figuring everything out, when the pros were there it was less about showing off and more about showing the best way to nail the line, etc. It was cool. Things started getting busier and busier and most certainly, by 2004 or 2005, the biggest comment/complaint from a lot of the guys I knew still riding the park was that these cats were up, fully donning their body protection and massive travel bikes, and just slamming the hill with reckless abandon and NO consideration for the flow or idea of other riders. They'd come, go uber hard, and usually either break themselves up or fellow riders up in a matter of a few runs.

If there's anything that can be said about "magnitude" when looking at Whistler (and Blackcomb) from a skiing/boarding/biking perspective, it's that things will get out of control on a long enough, fast enough, technical enough run. It's pure odds and statistics.

Part of it is access. Those of us who live close by and have the whole season to enjoy the park can take our time getting comfortable up there, ramping up slowly. Imagine if you spend thousands of dollars for a single week in the bike park. So you come from some place that doesn't have much WBP-style riding, you're anxious to make the most of your holiday AND you're on a rented unfamiliar long-travel bike that allows you to travel way outside your skills. You're at risk.

Every time I go up to the park I always take at least two trips up the Fitz chair to get warmed up. See what the dirt's like, see how I'm feeling, see how my bike's doing. It's kind of the same view I take for the whole season.

This is called being "wise" and "experienced". Period.

If people wanna make the most of their limited time in Whistler, bottom line is don't get bashed up or broken up at the onset. Save the high risk biz for the last day

[this philosophy goes for the snowsport scene too. I love this time of year in Whistler as the most casts, crutches, and slings are seen during the months of April and May, and hey, that's alright - they saved the big risk till the end, makes total sense to me]

Kind of off topic but I work 5 on 5 off so I want to try to spend 13-15 days a month over in Whistler this summer, learning to ride the new bike. Where would you guys recommend to look for a place to sublet? I know I could check Craigslist but is there a local bulletin board or website that might be better to check?

Also check out the listings under Mountain Country Rentals, Gord's business. There are a host of professional rental management companies. Worth a look for at least knowing a good going rate when comparing varied properties.

Ha ha, I recall back in 2006 we met a guy from England ("RustyfromUk" on nsmb). He hit Whistler bike park pretty hard & Joyride ate his front wheel one of the days. Think he was in a bit over his head, but was lucky & made it out uninjured.

Unless I was seeing things, I thought that last week when I checked 2012 bike park prices on www.whistlerbike.com that it was $475 + tax for a season pass (purchased at anytime throughout the season) for edge card or winter pass holders. I checked the site today after seeing a post from Whistler Bike Park on Facebook, and it's now $489 until May 31, and $499 thereafter.

I could be wrong, but did anyone else see that same price?
Maybe it was last years prices I was looking at, quite possible....
