I know about the upgrades we have been doing, taking existing US systems and implementing them into our aircraft 4 years (or more) after the US has put the same systems on their Hornets. In the end we pay far more for the same capability, just to be able to say it is "Canadianized" with no real changes from the US software/hardware.

The stuff you see at Downsview is for DRDC, the modifications are not done there.

The point is, a working off the shelf-solution that satisfies the requirements put forth to replace the Hornet does not exist right now. F-35 is the closest and if F-15SE was low-obserable with some form of DAS it would be up there as well.

Easy to say that. But the reality is that any military aircraft is a target of a SAM system. And of course one can't ignore what has been termed the "Golden BB'".. where Freddy the Farmer walking along the trail here's military engines and fires his AK into the air in the general direction of the noise.

But while it is easy to get on the fast jet band wagon. The other reality we need to face is where we are more likely to send troops in the future. And it's more likely to places like Rawanda where other options other then a fast billion dollar F-18 derivitive will work. Sure buying one expensive jet to try to do it all sounds good but we need to options. Fast jets for the usual roles while something like the Pucara for other jobs.

I can see them using this as a "cheaper" replacement for the CP-140 Aurora's then buying a new manned aircraft. I say this as RCAF Comox and Goose Bay are where the maritime patrol craft are based.

Only the RCAF and maybe the navy. Unfortunately the army still needs troops to do the job.
