In the "Related Videos" to Obama talking about Trayvon, there's a video of Rick Santorum shooting a handgun at a target while someone in the crowd shouts "PRETEND ITS OBAMA!"

Pretty sure that highlights some cultural differences...

While Canada isn't a pinnacle of virtue for race relations, I agree with Cam that this event really reflects a lot of what has gone wrong in the US. The way this Zimmerman guy hasn't been charged is insane. He shot someone and there's no way that would have happened here. Our society is very different and I think that Cam pointed this out very effectively.

I notice that Zimmerman isn't as white as his name would suggest, but that he identifies as Hispanic. This is when we'll start seeing people defend his actions by arguing about who he is in order to deflect attention from what he did. He shot someone that wasn't doing anything wrong.

And Enduramil, I thought you were making fun of Cam for being defensive with all his graphs and paragraphs, but what you said also reminded me of Rick Santorum mocking Obama for being a snob when he said he wants people to go to college. I agree that facts and figures can take away from a lived personal experience of racism, but I believe that it it's only through a deeper understanding of these situations that policy decisions can be made that can change things for the better. I'm pessimistic about this happening in real life in American society, but it's how I believe change will happen.

It's getting really tough to decipher the truth now that opposing sides are trying to muddy the waters. Apparently some of the photos getting posted of Trayvon are doctored to make him look older and bigger. At the same time the images used by most of the media were old, making him look younger and more vulnerable. There are some questions about what was said on the 911 tape as well.

What a mess. I have no faith that anyone can get to the truth of this matter now that it has become so politicized.

Although it is a tragedy the man who shot him was acting legally, until he has had his day in court simply assuming he is guilty is wrong and will help out his defense. If you don't like the law repeal it.

Remember this case is not exactly new and has been investigated once already. The amount of time spent in the media on voicing inflammatory opinions vs facts is shameful. To anyone who prejudges based on limited and biased media exposure, I hope you might consider the historical record of trial by media.
