Cypress Trails - Your Help Needed

The District of West Vancouver is moving towards having sanctioned, sustainable trails on Cypress, however the recommendations fall short of protecting the current riding experience.

The Open House is Tuesday March 6th from 5 PM to 8 PM at the West Vancouver Community Centre, 2121 Marine Drive. If you're busy Tuesdays, there's another Open House on Wednesday, February 29 at Gleneagles Community Centre, 6262 Marine Drive.

Read on here for more details about the future of Cypress...

We need a good show since many concepts from the Parks department are not getting through to the planning department such as

"Strategy for guiding management, conservation and use of the Old Growth Conservancy in the context of a proposed mountain bike park south of the area;"

"District has 19 kilometres of mountain bike trails, this is a very high value recreational resource, the trails are not sanctioned and there is no organized maintenance; some trails are on District land, others on private land; Best practice: North Van has an excellent management model for mountain bike trails"

"Include in the Terms of Reference for the Upper Lands Study the need to find permanent locations for mountain bike trails. "

Now is our opportunity to protect the trails and keep development lower on the mountain.

The area in blue is where potential development can happen if we don't speak now.

The biggest problem I think with Cypress is, unlike North Van, not many voters ride mountain bikes...their just a bunch of roadies

would that change if we had maintained trails? Sure we don't want them totally dumbed down, but with some maintenance they would be more ridable by more people.

If you think that maintenance will change the nature of cypress too much then you won't be too bothered by this route where there will be NO trails.

Marked it on my calendar. If I get a chance to speak I will emphasize the importance of preserving the uniqueness of the trails on cypress, the many committed volunteers who maintain the trails, and the importance of including the nsmba when making decisions about land use and trail modifications.

Great comments. Members of the Parks Master Plan Working Group will be there and that's the type of feedback they should hear directly from you. Find one of them and talk with them.

To quote the DWV Parks Manager, "It's time we heard from the mountain bikers."

I think the mountain should accommodate all levels of rider. There isn't a lot of easier trails on the north shore. Technical trails have their place but we shouldn't discourage people new to the sport or less adventurous.

Is there any chance I can be of any help from my place? I'd like to share my viewpoint that the trails on Cypress can not only be regarded as something having a sort of historical value, but (in a broader sense) a cultural value that needs preservation for future generations. Similar to Moab it should be regarded as one of the places on Earth that truly influenced mountain biking.

Cypress inmho is the pinnacle of riding technique and a certain style that should not be "dumbed down".

If I can be of any help, let me know, be it email, or phone, or both. Unfortunately I cannot show up.

Getting an email address for feedback would be a good thing to ask at tonight's open house 5-8 pm at Gleneagles Community Centre.
