Coming down the Alps this summer on our touring bikes which had Avid mechanical disc brakes and I remember:
1) Everyone on road bikes was flatting from their rims heating up too much
2) Our friend who had hydraulic disc brakes on his mountain bike (Juicy 5s) had them overheat.

So why not just stick with mechanical?
